The Magdeburg Literature House in Magdeburg-Buckau , in the house where the poet Erich Weinert was born , organizes exhibitions, literary events and other cultural events, such as the Magdeburg Literature Weeks. The literary house also maintains the archive on Erich Weinert, Georg Kaiser , Nomi Rubel and other authors in the region and looks after the estates of these authors.

The Literaturhaus Magdeburg is located in the Buckau district, a traditional residential area. The city's large mechanical engineering companies were once concentrated in this area. There, at Thiemstrasse No. 7, is Erich Weinert's birthplace, today's house of literature.

Until December 2004, the literary house was an institution of the cultural office of the city of Magdeburg. Since 2005 the sponsoring association “Literaturhaus Magdeburg e. V. “the fortunes of the house. In 2005/2006 the building was completely renovated.

Fields of work

The Literaturhaus organizes various types of events, such as author readings, musical-literary events, film adaptations, reading promotion for children and young people, teacher training, participation in literary projects of the city of Magdeburg and the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In addition, the Literaturhaus houses two permanent exhibitions on Erich Weinert and Georg Kaiser. There are further exhibitions on literary topics of national and world literature, regional literature, the relationship between visual arts and literature and also children's and youth literature. This is made possible by close cooperation with other literary associations and societies as well as the authors' associations of Saxony-Anhalt, some of which are based in the house (see member associations). Maintaining the Magdeburg literary traditions and the literary heritage of the region are also among the fields of work of the Literaturhaus. For this purpose, the literary house collects and processes authors' bequests (e.g. from Nomi Rubel , Oskar Schönberg, Christa Johannsen , Gerhard Kahlo , Heinz Glade and others). In addition, documentation was set up on literary life in the city of Magdeburg and the surrounding area, and a library on authors from the region was set up. This is made possible, among other things, by the support of many private lenders, who provide extensive material on literary life. The archive and library are accessible for regional research, for students at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg , but also for everyone with a private interest in literature.

The basis of the literary house are the collections and permanent exhibitions on the working-class poet Erich Weinert and the playwright Georg Kaiser, both of whom were born around the same time in Magdeburg, but whose paths have never crossed.
