The Georg Büchner Society is a literary society founded in Marburg in 1979. It promotes knowledge and further research into the entire work, life and impact of the writer Georg Büchner and, in connection with this, research and knowledge of the aesthetic and political, especially the democratic tendencies in literature and history of the Vormärz , especially in Hesse.

Publications and events

The Society has been publishing the Georg Büchner Yearbook since 1981 (in collaboration with the Georg Büchner Research Center - Literature and History of the Vormärz at the Institute for Modern German Literature at the Philipps University of Marburg ) , which is headed by the Marburg Germanist Burghard Dedner , which contains the full range of research results and discussions and 13 volumes of which had been published by 2016. It publishes a series of publications with sources as well as new research contributions ( Büchner studies , so far 10 volumes) and organizes scientific conferences and lectures.

According to its statutes, the society abstains from "any sacred club life as well as all festive and celebratory events". It organizes a symposium once a year.

Members and Board of Directors

The founding members of the company include a. Lothar Bornscheuer (Duisburg), Jörn Garber (Marburg), Hubert Gersch (Münster), Walter Grab (Tel Aviv), Reinhold Grimm (Madison), Thomas Michael Mayer (Marburg), Ingrid and Günter Oesterle (Gießen) and Hans-Joachim Ruckhäberle (Munich).

Since 2016, the three-person executive board has been made up of chairman Matthias Gröbel, his deputy Alfons Glück and managing director Eva-Maria Vering.
