Thomas Michael Mayer

Thomas Michael Mayer (born November 29, 1946 in Munich ; † June 17, 2010 in Marburg ) was a German German studies scholar and Georg Büchner researcher.

After studying German, Mayer received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin in 1978 . He was a university assistant there and moved to the Philipps University of Marburg in 1981 . Here he set up the Georg Büchner Research Center - Literature and History of the Vormärz and prepared an application for funding for a historically critical Büchner edition in the long-term program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) . He had been academic advisor at the Institute for Modern German Literature in Marburg since 1986 and was co-editor of the Büchner edition, the first volumes of which appeared in 2000. In 2003 he left the Georg Büchner Research Center , where he had worked closely with its director Burghard Dedner for many years . He retired in 2009.

In 1979 Mayer became the founding chairman of the Georg Büchner Society , which he headed until 1996. From 1981 to 2000 he edited nine volumes of the Georg Büchner Yearbook, some alone. In 1981 he organized the 1st International Georg Büchner Symposium in Darmstadt and in the same year he was the first to receive the Hessian Culture Prize . He was also instrumental in planning the Büchner exhibition in Darmstadt in 1987. Since the 1990s he has been one of the main participants in controversies within Büchner research, for example with Jan-Christoph Hauschild .
