The German Thomas Mann Society based in Lübeck e. V. was founded in 1965 by Lübeck citizens and Thomas Mann friends. It has its office in Lübeck's Buddenbrookhaus at Mengstrasse 4.

From the 1970s, the German Thomas Mann Society opened up to international science and as a result became an important forum for Thomas Mann research worldwide. It deepens the scientific exchange about Thomas Mann and his work as well as promoting the dialogue between science and the readership.

The German Thomas Mann Society has almost 1000 members, making it one of the largest literary societies in Germany. The first local association of the German Thomas Mann Society was founded in Bonn in 2008, followed by the Thomas Mann Circle in Berlin in 2012 and the Thomas Mann Society in Hamburg in 2016. The German Thomas Mann Society, together with the Thomas Mann Society Zurich, publishes the Thomas Mann Yearbook, which is published by Vittorio Klostermann . Hans Wißkirchen , executive director of the Lübeck museums , has been president since 2005 .

The German Thomas Mann Society supports young academics. The Young Forum Thomas Mann in Society is made up of literary scholars in all phases of academic qualification, from the beginning of studies to habilitation. Since 2004 the society has been awarding a scientific advancement award for special achievements by young scientists. As early as 2003, the Society for Young Talent was awarded the Hartmut Vogel Prize for Literature Mediation from the Working Group on Literary Societies and Memorials (ALG).

The Society awards the Thomas Mann Medal at irregular intervals for exceptional contributions to Thomas Mann research.

The autumn conference takes place every year, at which Thomas Mann researchers and the interested public deal with key topics in lectures and discussions, for example in 2018 on "The Mann Brothers and the Revolution 1918" and in 2019 on "The Mann Brothers and the Movie". The topic “Exile as a spiritual way of life: Thomas Mann 1933-1955” is planned for the year 2021.
