German Society for the Study of Westerns

The German Society for the Study of Western (German Association for the Study of the Western (GASW)) was founded in 1990 and has its headquarters in the Westphalian Münster . Since 1993 she has been a member of the Working Group on Literary Societies in Germany

The most important goal of the GASW is the scientific and didactic study of the Western in its literary manifestations and influences inside and outside the USA .

The GASW has given the Elmer Kelton Award for services to the Western since 1999 . Prize winners are Matt Braun ( 1999 ), Werner J. Egli ( 2003 ), Loren D. Estleman ( 2008 ), Birgit Hans ( 2004 ), Thomas Jeier ( 1999 ) and Karl Jürgen Roth ( 2012 ).

The GASW maintains a research institute with a library, organizes annual scientific conferences and has published an annual newsletter and the journal Studies in the Western since 1990 .
