The German Tolkien Society e. V. (DTG) is a non-profit literary association that deals with the life and work of the British author JRR Tolkien and wants to promote the dissemination of his works as well as the scholarly discussion of them. DTG was founded on August 1st, 1997 and has been registered in the register of associations in Cologne , its headquarters, since 1998 . The DTG publishes its association magazine Der Flammifer von Westernis twice a year , as well as the scientific yearbook Hither Shore , which contains the contributions of the Tolkien seminar and other articles in the context of Tolkien research. The DTG annually organizes the Tolkien Thing , the Tolkien Seminar and several Tolkien days . The members organize themselves regionally in Tolkien round tables .

The DTG is also a member of the Working Group of Literary Societies and Memorials .

Events

Every summer, the DTG organizes a large members' meeting ( Tolkien Thing ), at which official decisions are made by the general assembly and the members of the association's board are elected. Over the past few years, over 100 people have participated in the Tolkien Thing .

In addition, there is Tolkien Day , which has been held several times a year since 1996. This event actually began as a single day on which the topic of Tolkien was to be brought closer to a wider audience (including non-club members) in the form of lectures, games and demonstrations. In the meantime, Tolkien Day has turned into a full weekend (mostly Saturday and Sunday), and the event takes place in changing locations across Germany. Tolkien days have already been organized in Augsburg , Berlin , Bonn , Geldern , Hamburg , Hanover , Rodgau , Veste Otzberg and Cologne .

Another event was added in 2004 and is to take place regularly every year: the Tolkien Seminar . This is a small scientific congress at which well-known Tolkien experts from Europe give lectures on a certain common topic, which are then discussed with the participants. The first seminar was held in Cologne in April 2004. Other conference locations were Jena (April 2005, May 2007, April 2008, April 2010, April 2012, May 2014), Mainz (April 2006), Hanover (April 2009) Potsdam (April 2011), Aachen (April 2013, May 2015) and Augsburg (October 2017).

Finally, there is a fourth activity, which is less influenced by the scientific development of Tolkien's work, but also has an important function for club life: the Tolkien Stammtisch . In more than a dozen cities in Germany there is a regular meeting (usually once a month) under the patronage of the DTG. The get-togethers are something like regional representatives of the DTG, because they are the first point of contact with the DTG (at least in the big cities) for many future club members. The organizing committees for the Tolkien Days are usually formed from the regulars' tables .

Publications

The other important area of the DTG club life includes publications: The members' magazine Der Flammifer von Westernis appears twice a year . The magazine now has 60 pages and a colored cover and four colored pages in the middle, and the topics of the articles range from event reports and essays to reviews and satire. Since mid-2003, the Flammifer has been presenting one of the Tolkien companies around the world in every issue. a. Hungary, Israel, Greece, Austria, Belgium and Taiwan portrayed. Every issue of Flammifer has an “English Summary” of the content. This is intended to facilitate international cooperation with the magazines of foreign Tolkien companies. All DTG members automatically receive the Flammifer by post as part of their membership.

In addition to the club magazine, there is another printed DTG publication: The Hither Shore is the interdisciplinary and international specialist book of the DTG. It is about modern fantasy literature, especially JRR Tolkien's work. As a DTG yearbook, the Hither Shore documents the DTG's Tolkien seminar of the previous year as well as other scientific research work from the DTG and its direct environment. The Hither Shore series won the German Phantastik Prize in the category “Best Secondary Work” in 2006 and 2008.
