The Lessing Academy e. V. in Wolfenbüttel serves as a non-profit association primarily to research the work and life of Lessing and his time, the Enlightenment era . It is located in the Herzog August Library .

The academy was founded in 1971 on the site of Lessing's last place of work. The founding members included Paul Raabe and the first President Max Plaut .

aims

The aim of the academy is to “create a place for research, documentation and further development for Lessing's intellectual legacy and the German Enlightenment”. Another focus is "the social and cultural history of German Jewry, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries". At the same time "the idea of ​​tolerance and humanity in the public consciousness" should be kept alive. (Quotes from self-portrayal).

The work of the Lessing Academy is presented to the public in the form of scientific conferences, lectures and exhibitions as well as through the issuing of publications, digital editions such as Lessing's translations or the documentation of contemporary evidence from 1750 to 1800.

Together with the Braunschweig Foundation, it has also awarded the Lessing Prize for Criticism since 2000 .
