Walter Behrmann
Walter Emmerich Behrmann (born May 22, 1882 in Oldenburg , † May 3, 1955 in Berlin ) was a German geographer .
Life
During his studies in Göttingen, Behrmann became a member of the Schwarzburgbund - Association of Burschenschaft Germania in 1901 . He was a professor in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin. In 1910, while still working as an assistant at the Geographical Institute in Berlin, he presented an equal-area cylinder projection with the standard latitude of 30 ° N and S ("Behrmann cylinder projection"), which is still used today. In 1912/1913 he took part in an expedition to explore German New Guinea (now Papua New Guinea ). In 1940 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .
