Lardyao ( Thai ลาดยาว , RTGS : Lat Yao; officially Klong Prem Central Prison , เรือนจำ กลาง คลอง เปรม , Rueancham Klang Khlong Prem) is a prison in the Chatuchak district in the north of the Thai capital Bangkok . It has the nickname "Bangkok Hilton".

history

It was originally created as an offshoot of Klong Prem Prison . This was a temporary prison that was built in 1944. In 1959 it became an additional vocational training center for prisoners. As a result, the old Klong Prem prison was completely overcrowded a year later.

The Thai Ministry of the Interior built a new building and separated the Lardyao Interim Detention Center from the training center.

In 1970 the separation became final, the Lardyao was upgraded to the Klong Prem Central Prison, and the old prison now serves as a special detention center for Bangkok.

Lardyao today

Lardyao has an ancient tradition of tattooing . Prisoners teach each other the old Thai technique of tying needles to a stick, dipping them in ink and then tattooing them stitch by stitch.

Prisoners have no status in Lardyao. International prisoners report devastating conditions. The prisoners can only move outside of their cell with heavy shackles , which is why the noise level is very high. With the multitude of prisoners, the clink of a single chain grows to the roar of a great many.

As with most prisons in Thailand, Amnesty International complains that inmates are mistreated and not adequately protected from one another.
