The Kleine Kalmit (from Latin calvus mons , 'bald mountain' ) is 270.5 m above sea level. NHN high elevation in the hill country in front of the Haardt , the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located on the suburbs of the independent city of Landau in the Palatinate and Ilbesheim in the district of Südliche Weinstrasse . To distinguish it from the Kalmit (also called Big Kalmit ; 672.6 m ), its name is given the attribute small . At the top is the Mater Dolorosa- Chapel (Chapel for the consolation of the poor) as a highly visible landmark.

location
The Kleine Kalmit rises in the east of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park . Your peak lies in the southern Palatinate approximately 15 km south-southwest of the Haardt located Kalmit and 6 km southwest of the main town of Landau. Its larger area is part of the district of Arzheim , which is 1.2 km to the northeast, and Wollmesheim is 1.8 km to the southeast ; both are districts of Landau. The south and west sides belong to the local community of Ilbesheim, a few hundred meters south-west.
Natural allocation
The Kleine Kalmit belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Northern Upper Rhine Lowland (No. 22), in the main unit Haardtrand (220) and in the subunit Oberhaardt (220.2) to the natural area Südliche Oberhaardt (220.21).
Flowing waters
To the north the landscape of the Kleine Kalmit falls into the valley of the Ranschbach , which passes Arzheim north, and to the southwest and south into the valley of the Birnbach , which flows there through Ilbesheim and Wollmesheim; both are right tributaries of the Queich .
nature
The Little Kalmit is a botanical gem with a rich occurrence of the rare pasque flower . The species-rich fauna includes 87 species of spiders and 43 species of butterflies . The Kleine Kalmit nature reserve is located on small parts of the elevation ( CDDA no. 164113; designated 1984; 5.65 hectares in size). Locally they found fossilized shark teeth and human artifacts from the Stone Age .
history
On Halloween night from October 31st to November 1st, 2019, the chapel on the hilltop was badly damaged by vandalism by two young people. Parts of the building were collapsed with a stolen wheel loader , but an apparent attempt to tip it to one side failed. An excavator was overturned in the area, the grill hut named after Prince Eugen was destroyed, and corn fields and vineyards were devastated.
Economy, traffic, hiking
On the southern and western flanks of the Kleine Kalmit near Ilbesheim, viticulture is practiced and a small saffron cultivation is cultivated, the only one in the Palatinate. In 1956 the local wine cooperative Kleine Kalmit was founded, which was the forerunner of the wine cooperative Deutsches Weintor , which had existed since 1967 .
To the north, past the Kleine Kalmit, Kreisstraße 6 leads through Arzheim ; it turns into Kreisstraße 20 , which passes the village of Ilbesheim west of the elevation. The K 20 meets the state road 509 southwest of the elevation at a height of 221 m, which runs through southern parts of Ilbesheim and east of it through Wollmesheim. The southern route of the Palatinate Way of St. James leads over the Kleine Kalmit .
