The ETA Hoffmann-Gesellschaft e. V. is a literary society with headquarters in Bamberg , dedicated to the person and work of the German writer , composer and signer E. TA Hoffmann dedicated (1776 to 1822).

history

Hoffmann spent almost five years of his life, from September 1, 1808 to April 21, 1813, in Bamberg. In 1908, a memorial plaque was placed on his second apartment, Zinkenwörth No. 50 (today Schillerplatz 26), which Hoffmann had moved into on May 1, 1809 . On April 6, 1930, a loose group of Hoffmann friends opened a museum here , today's ETA Hoffmann House .

The society was founded with the help of the Bamberg poets' circle on June 14, 1938 during a week of juggling culture . The publisher Wilhelm Ament took over the management . The office was the city traffic office . After the Second World War , the revival did not take place until 1958. On January 14, 1969, the company was entered in the register of associations and declared non-profit . The number of members in Germany and abroad rose from 128 to around 435 today, including around 50 institutions .

The first statute after the Second World War was dated May 14, 1964. The following, dated November 23, 1968, forms the basis for all other statutes up to the present statute of April 21, 2013. The presidium , which is elected for a period of three years consists of the President, the Vice-President, the Managing Director and the Treasurer, all of whom are volunteers .

The company was in charge of the ETA Hoffmann House in Bamberg until 2019. With a cooperation agreement dated February 18, 2020, the city of Bamberg took over its sponsorship retroactively from January 1, 2020.

The society is a member of the Working Group of Literary Societies and Memorials and of the Working Group of Music Museums in Germany .

tasks

According to the statutes of April 21, 2013, the ETA Hoffmann Society should “look after ETA Hoffmann's artistic legacy, process it scientifically, disseminate it in a public manner (e.g. through readings, lectures, colloquia, exhibitions, etc.) and establish contact with Hoffmann researchers and Maintaining Hoffmann friends ”. In addition, she endeavors to preserve the preserved Hoffmann memorials . Every year it publishes the ETA Hoffmann-Jahrbuch , a scientific periodical that also contains reports and communications from the society. The society regularly holds a conference with a research forum once a year . The international mandate is constitutive.

Collections

The collections, first editions and other editions , literature about Hoffmann and his work, autographs , graphics and photos , which were set up especially in the founding phase of the museum, were entrusted to the Bamberg State Library in 1958 and 1961 . Since then, she has been responsible for continuing her own collection focus on ETA Hoffmann.

Publications

The communications of the ETA Hoffmann-Gesellschaft, based in Bamberg ( ISSN  0073-2885 ) appeared from 1938 to 1943 in three small booklets. The periodical was self-published from 1958 to 1991 and from 1992/1993 was incorporated into the newly founded ETA Hoffmann yearbook ( ISSN  0944-5277 ), which is published by Erich Schmidt Verlag . As in the past the announcements , each member receives the yearbook as an annual gift.
