The ETA Hoffmann House in the Upper Franconian city of Bamberg is a memorial dedicated to the person and work of the German writer, composer and draftsman ETA Hoffmann (1776–1822).
history
ETA Hoffmann spent almost five years of his life, from September 1, 1808 to April 21, 1813, in Bamberg. On May 1st, 1809, he moved into the top two floors of the house at Zinkenwörth No. 50 (today Schillerplatz 26). A memorial plaque was placed here in 1908 and on April 6, 1930, a loose group of Hoffmann friends opened a museum, today's ETA Hoffmann House. The ETA Hoffmann Society was founded in Bamberg on June 14, 1938 during a juggling week and with the help of the Bamberg poets' circle .
The museum was set up under the theme of ETA Hoffmann in Bamberg . For this purpose, the founder, the psychologist and publisher Wilhelm Ament , created his own collections ( first and other editions , literature about ETA Hoffmann and his work, autographs , graphics and photos). However, these were entrusted to the Bamberg State Library in 1958 and 1961 . Afterwards they wanted to furnish the museum like in Hoffmann's time; however, there were neither documents nor original equipment.
Today the museum extends to the whole house (only about 3.5 meters wide on the street front) including the rear building and garden. It was looked after by the ETA Hoffmann Society with the support of the City of Bamberg until 2019 and, on a case-by-case basis , funded by state institutions , societies , foundations and sponsors . With a cooperation agreement dated February 18, 2020, the city of Bamberg took over the sponsorship of the ETA Hoffmann House retrospectively from January 1, 2020. The cultural office of the city of Bamberg is responsible for the operation. The property is owned by the Bamberg World Heritage Foundation.
Museum concept
The ETA Hoffmann-Haus provides image, text and sound information - especially in installations - according to modern museum didactic points of view. The only memorial dedicated to ETA Hoffmann wants to do justice to the various areas of life and creativity. The specific realistic, fantastic, Hoffmann-esque flair is retained.
The cabinet of mirrors and an anamorphosis by Hoffmann set the mood for the multi-layered personality. The magic garden according to the story The golden pot makes motifs from Hoffmann's life and work as well as individual quotations tangible through its layout and planting. The paper theater in a niche on the stairs evokes the fairy tale Nutcracker and the Mouse King , a replica box with decorations by Karl Friedrich Schinkel conjures up the opera Undine ; whose idea was born in Bamberg, it is considered the earliest German romantic opera. A truth microscope according to the master Flea makes the most secret thoughts legible .
An interactive music cabinet lets Hoffmann's music play along with the musical notation in modern recordings . In poets little room a historic is Pianoforte a listening station experience; it corresponds to the musical instrument with which Hoffmann portrayed himself as Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler . The rest of the equipment in this musical and poetic laboratory is based on a different self-portrayal on the desk and “bed”.
In a lecture room with another historical pianoforte, readings of the works of Hoffmann and his contemporaries as well as exhibitions mostly of illustrations by modern artists take place.
