Eckart Kleßmann

Eckart Kleßmann (born March 17, 1933 in Lemgo ) is a German journalist , writer and historian who mainly deals with the 19th century .

Live and act

Eckart Kleßmann is the youngest son of the surgeon Gustav Kleßmann (1893–1974) and Käthe Westheermann (1894–1962), his older brother was the art historian Rüdiger Klessmann . After graduating from high school in Lemgo in 1953, he first studied art history in Tübingen , Munich and Göttingen until 1956 .

From 1956 to 1960, Kleßmann completed his training as a retail and publishing bookseller in Stuttgart , after which he worked there as an editor of the evangelical-conservative weekly newspaper Christ und Welt . After moving to Hamburg in 1961, Kleßmann initially worked as an editor and publisher's authorized signatory, and from 1964 to 1970 he worked as an editor of the literary supplement to the daily newspaper Die Welt . Kleßmann was then editor of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit until 1976 .

Kleßmann has been a freelance writer since 1977. In 1981 he wrote a history of the city of Hamburg. In addition, Kleßmann wrote several books on German Romanticism, including a biography of Caroline Michaelis / Böhmer / Schlegel / Schelling , as well as several volumes of poetry. Since 1995 he has lived in his adopted home Bengerstorf near Boizenburg / Elbe. In 2007, Kleßmann published autobiographical episodes about his childhood during the Nazi era .

In 1984 Kleßmann taught as a visiting professor at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire . In 1989 he was awarded the Irmgard Heilmann Prize and in 1998 the Lion Feuchtwanger Prize of the Berlin Academy of the Arts . He is a member of the Free Academy of Arts in Hamburg , the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and the Patriotic Society of 1765 , as well as an honorary member of the Telemann Society.
