Bernhard Schemmel

Hans Bernhard Schemmel (born August 4, 1940 in Obernigk, Lower Silesia Province , today Oborniki Śląskie , Lower Silesian Voivodeship , Poland ) is a German specialist in German , folklorist and librarian . From 1984 to 2005 he was director of the Bamberg State Library .

Life

After graduating from high school in Schweinfurt in 1960 , Bernhard Schemmel studied German , English and folklore from 1960 to 1966 at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 1966 he passed the state examination for higher teaching qualifications at grammar schools , and from 1967 to 1973 he worked as a research assistant at the Department of German Philology at the University of Würzburg. In 1968 he was in Würzburg with a thesis on St. Gertrud in Franconia doctorate .

From 1973 to 1975 he completed his legal traineeship for service at academic libraries in Bavaria . From 1975 he worked at the Bamberg State Library, which he took over from 1984 until his retirement in 2005. In 1991 and 1992 he was also acting director of the Coburg State Library .

From 1969 to 1973 he was a lecturer at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg, and from 1981 to 1994 at the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg . In 2000, the Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research and Art made him an honorary professor for the field of "Cultural and literary history of Franconia " at the University of Bamberg.

From 1999 to 2016 Bernhard Schemmel was chairman or (since 2010) president of the ETA Hoffmann-Gesellschaft , since 2017 he has been its managing director.

2014: E. T. A. Hoffmann Prize of the City of Bamberg
2017: Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon
