Rudolf Alexander Schröder Foundation

The Rudolf Alexander Schröder Foundation is named after the honorary citizen of Bremen, the poet, translator, architect and interior designer Rudolf Alexander Schröder (1878–1962). According to the statutes, it performs two tasks:

  • It has awarded the Bremen Literature Prize annually since 1962 , which has been supplemented since 1977 by the advancement prize endowed with 6,000 euros and financed by the Bremen Public Insurance Company (ÖVB).
  • In connection with the award ceremony, the foundation also supports a program of literary events in Bremen, which has made a name for itself since 1976 as the thematic Bremen Literary Week .

The foundation does not have the task of maintaining the works; Schröder's literary estate is in the German Literature Archive in Marbach .

Bremen Literature Prize

The Bremen Literature Prize was awarded by the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen from 1954 to 1959 at the suggestion of the jury, until the jury was duped in 1959 by the refusal of the Senate to award Günter Grass for The Tin Drum and largely resigned.

The independent Rudolf Alexander Schröder Foundation has been awarded the Bremen Literature Prize since the Senate established it in 1962. It is currently endowed with 20,000 euros. Since 1977, the literature prize has been supplemented by a sponsorship prize, the financing of which has been assumed by the ÖVB since 2005 in the amount of 6,000 euros. Both prizes are awarded every year on January 26th, Rudolf Alexander Schröder's birthday, in the Bremen town hall.

Foundation bodies

The foundation organs are the executive board, which is appointed by the senate, and two colleges for the two tasks performed by the foundation. The college of the Bremen Literature Prize consists of the board of directors and four other members appointed by the board of directors as well as the previous year's winners. The board of the Literary Week Bremen is named by the management of the foundation.
