Jaroslav Rudiš (born June 8, 1972 in Turnov ) is a Czech writer , playwright and screenwriter who also writes in German.

Life

Rudiš grew up in Lomnice nad Popelkou and attended high school in Turnov. He initially studied German , history and journalism in Liberec , Zurich and Prague before coming to Berlin on a journalist scholarship . His first novel Der Himmel unter Berlin ( Nebe pod Berlínem , 2002) was written in Berlin . In 2002, Rudiš received the Jiří Orten Prize for this book .

He worked for a long time as a cultural editor for the daily Právo and has lived in Prague as a freelance writer and journalist since 2006 .

In September 2006, his second novel, Grandhotel , was published by Labyrint in Prague ; At the same time, the film version of the material, in which Rudiš himself played a supporting role, was released in Czech cinemas and was also shown at the Berlinale. The German translation of Grandhotel hit bookshops in early December 2008. In 2007, his third novel, Potichu ( The Silence ), was published in the Czech Republic and was well received by Czech critics.

The author also works in the dramatic field; together with Petr Pýcha he has written several plays. a. were seen at theaters in Prague and Ústí nad Labem . Lately Rudiš has also been writing in German; Together with the Leipzig author Martin Becker , he wrote the radio play Lost in Praha , which was first broadcast on April 1, 2008 on Westdeutscher Rundfunk . In addition, both authors wrote a libretto for an opera about 1968, which also premiered in 2008 in Prague and Berlin.

In addition to his work as a writer, Rudiš gained a lot of popularity through the cartoon character Alois Nebel , which he designed together with the Czech rock singer and draftsman Jaromír Švejdík . In addition to weekly comic strips, a complete comic book is now also available in English. A German translation took place in 2012. Together with Jaromír Švejdík and his publisher Joachim Dvořák, Rudiš founded the band The Bombers in winter 2007 , whose first CD was released in the Czech Republic.

At the end of 2007 Rudiš was elected to one of the thirty most important personalities in the Czech Republic, together with representatives from politics and society.

In 2014 Rudiš was awarded the International Usedom Literature Prize. In 2018 he received the Prize of the Literature Houses and the Chamisso Prize / Hellerau .

His novel Winterbergs last Reise , published in 2019, was nominated at the Leipzig Book Fair in the “Fiction” category.

Rudiš's works have been translated into German, French, English, Dutch, Spanish, Polish and Finnish.
