Aglaya Veteranyi

Aglaja Veteranyi (born May 17, 1962 in Bucharest ; † February 3, 2002 in Zurich ) was a Swiss actress and writer .

Life

Aglaja Veteranyi came from a Romanian family of circus performers; the father was Tandarica Veteranyi and performed as a clown , her mother was the acrobat Josefina Tanasa . In 1967 the family fled Romania . In the following years Aglaya Veteranyi was forced to perform as an artist and dancer. In 1977 the family settled in Switzerland. Aglaja Veteranyi was able to speak Romanian and Spanish, but because she had not attended a regular school due to the frequent changes of location, she was illiterate . She learned the written and spoken German language herself . In addition, she completed an acting training at the Schauspielgemeinschaft Zürich , where she then also taught.

Veteranyi has lived in Zurich as a freelance writer and actress since 1982 . In 1988, together with Christian Seiler, she took over the management of the Zurich Acting Association (now the Zurich Acting School ) until August 2001 . She has published numerous texts in magazines and anthologies and has worked on various theater projects. a. with René Oberholzer in the literary experimental group The Word Pump . She was a member of the German-Swiss PEN Center . Participation in the Ingeborg Bachmann competition 1999 ( Why the child cooks in the polenta ). Since autumn 2001, Aglaja Veteranyi has been in a mental crisis, which led to her suicide in February 2002 by drowning in Lake Zurich .

Aglaja Veteranyi has written novels , short stories, poems and plays . Above all, her autobiographical texts, in which she dealt with her difficult childhood, were highly praised by literary critics for their authenticity . Her novel The Shelf of the Last Breaths remained unfinished and was published posthumously .

She found her final resting place in the Manegg cemetery in Zurich .
