Vladimir Vertlib
Vladimir Vertlib (born July 2, 1966 in Leningrad ) is an Austrian writer of Russian-Jewish origin.
Life
Vertlib emigrated from Russia with his family in 1971. Stations on the odyssey that finally brought him to Austria in 1981 were Israel , the Netherlands , the USA and Italy . He studied in Vienna Economics and received in 1986 the Austrian citizenship .
Vertlib initially published in literary magazines before publishing his first book in 1995. In his first two books, Deportation and Interim Stations, he processes experiences from his migrant life. Deportation describes the failed attempt by an immigrant family to gain a foothold in the USA. Intermediate stations describes the temporary stays in various places around the world. In The Special Memory of Rosa Masur , he tells the life story of a woman over 90 years old: from childhood in the Jewish shtetl to the Leningrad blockade and repression by representatives of the Soviet state to emigration to Germany in the 90s. The question of Jewish identity is the central theme of Last Wish .
Vertlib is addicted to realistic storytelling. In clear, unpretentious language, he tells general information about the history of Russian Jews in the 20th century based on individual fates. In addition to terrible or unpleasant events, his novels also contain a good portion of irony and the colorful decoration of individual episodes.
Vertlib lives in Salzburg and Vienna.
