Nellja Veremej (* 1963 in the Soviet Union ) is a Russian-German writer . She lives in Berlin .

Life

Nellja Veremej grew up in various places in the Soviet Union and finished school in the Caucasus. After studying Russian Philology at Leningrad University, she moved to Berlin in 1994. In the meantime she lived in Novi Sad , where she graduated from the journalism school there. Nellja Veremej worked as a Russian teacher, translator and journalist (especially for the weekly newspaper der Freitag ). She is now working full-time as a freelance writer.

In 2010 she won the Newcomer Prize as well as the audience prize at the Wartholz literature competition . In 2013 her first novel "Berlin lies in the east" was published by Jung und Jung . This was included in the longlist German Book Prize 2013 in August 2013 . In March 2014 she was awarded the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize 2014 and the 2014 Friedrich Hölderlin Prize of the City of Homburg. She was appointed Magdeburg City Clerk for the period from March to September 2018 .
