Marica Bodrožić (born August 3, 1973 in Zadvarje, SR Croatia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a German writer of Croatian descent.

Life

Until she was ten, Marica Bodrožić was raised by her grandfather in Svib in Dalmatia near Split . In 1983 she moved to Hesse and attended school in Sulzbach am Taunus . From this point on, she learned the German language . In her autobiographical book, heeding stars, coloring stars, which was awarded the German Language Initiative Prize , she describes her poetic and poetological relationship to what she calls her second mother tongue, which has also become the language of her literature. She has received several important awards. Bodrožić also works as a translator from English and Croatian. She has essays, features, and reviews, etc. a. Written about Nazim Hikmet , Anne Sexton , Robinson Jeffers , Dubravka Ugrešić , Danilo Kiš , Joseph Brodsky , Marina Zwetajewa and about bilingualism, for example by Elias Canetti and Vladimir Nabokov . As a visiting professor she taught a. a. at Dartmouth College in the USA German poetry of the 20th century and contemporary poetry. She also regularly gives creative writing courses at schools and universities or on behalf of the Goethe Institute . Her books have so far been translated into thirteen languages.

In 2007 her first documentary, which she made together with filmmaker Katja Gasser, was broadcast by 3sat ( The heart painting of memory. A journey through my Croatia ). She wrote the script for it and was a co-director.

In Frankfurt am Main , she trained as a bookseller and studied cultural anthropology , psychoanalysis and Slavic studies . She is a signatory of the declaration published in 2017 on the common language of Croats , Serbs , Bosniaks and Montenegrins .

After working in Paris and Zurich, Marica Bodrožić now lives as a freelance writer in Berlin and is a member of the PEN Center Germany .

Topics, form and reception

Her early stories and poems are devoted to the poetic exhaustion of memory and recollection; Most of these literary works are located in the hinterland of Dalmatia (sometimes also in Herzegovina , where she spent parts of her early childhood), in which the Mediterranean, the Karst and the mercilessness of the weather, of nature in general, are in the life and fate of the Mirror people. Again and again there are seekers, travelers, lost people whom she takes care of and whom she linguistically, erecting a monument to ordinary people, evokes, even sings about. The language itself becomes the protagonist for Marica Bodrožić. Her prose is always lyrically interspersed, the poetry in places narrative. In the more recent, especially lyrical works of the author, topics such as mysticism (see also below Mechthild von Magdeburg ), transcendence, eroticism, femininity and love occupy a larger space than before.

Her highest praise for her poetry was given by Walter Hinck in the FAZ , who certified her freshness and obstinacy to the same extent for her first volume of poetry: “ Well then: Marica Bodrožić refreshes German poetry. The poetic richness of images in Bodrožić's language is a particular highlight in her second volume of stories, Der Windsammler . However, here she is not immune from occasionally exaggerating, so that her stories exude an "overdose of poetry". Her novel Das Gedächtnis der Libellen is entirely dedicated to the concrete, places, characters and names are no longer located in the imaginary, but in the politically tangible. In her prose trilogy Das Gedächtnis der Libellen (2010), Kirschholz und alten Emotions (2012) as well as The Water of Our Dreams (2016) the author succeeds in designing an ensemble of figures cyclically: the physicist Nadeshda, the first-person narrator of the first novel , on the way from Berlin to Amsterdam to see Ilja, a married Jewish novelist with whom she has the son Ezra; Arjeta in Berlin, formerly a philosophy student in Paris , the first-person narrator of the second novel every week, the same age as the author; Ilja, the nameless first-person narrator of the third novel, who practices awakening from the coma for four seasons, fictitiously addressing the people who are important to him, such as Nadeshda and Arjeta. About the inability to give something that cannot be touched. ”The first-person narrator becomes a poet and with him the reader is enriched with an existential experience for himself and for his / her view of others. The essays by the author can be read before and after this novel, which is central to the history of the work.

The author held an event in the series Zwiesprachen at the Stiftung Lyrik Kabinett Munich and selected Mechthild von Magdeburg for it (December 4, 2017). The reason given by the author is: " Through the poetically recorded experience of this mystical paradox ['Flowing Light'], Mechthild deserves the place of one of the first women to write in German: a philosopher of the condensed time" .
