Heimito von Doderer Literature Prize

The Heimito von Doderer Literature Prize was donated by Henner Löffler in 1996 on the occasion of Heimito von Doderer's 100th birthday . It is intended on the one hand to keep alive the memory of "one of the most important writers" of the 20th century, on the other hand to honor individual or complete works of contemporary writers who are "characterized by high linguistic sensitivity and originality in the tradition" of Doderer.

The awards took place in Vienna in 1996 and in Berlin in 1997; from 1998 until the provisionally last award in 2010, the award was presented in Cologne.

“First works with a strong narrative” are awarded the Heimito von Doderer literary prize; Special prizes are awarded on special occasions. The main prize is associated with prize money of 20,000 euros (since 2006), the promotional and special prizes are each endowed with 5,000 euros.

In 1990 the NöART Lower Austria Society for Art and Culture awarded one-time Doderer literary prizes. Back then, the award winners were Robert Menasse and Kurt Strasser .
