Just a few months after Gerhard Polt's birth, his mother and her son moved to the Catholic pilgrimage site of Altötting during the Second World War in order to avoid the increasing danger of bombing in Munich. His father Richard, a lawyer and major during the war , spent part of the war years in Vienna . After the father's return from captivity to Munich, the family moved back to a common home in the city in 1951. In 1957, Polt and his mother moved again within Munich to Amalienstraße in Maxvorstadt . Years later, he dedicated his first radio play to this street, As if there were a badger in his den. . After graduating from high school , he studied political science at the Munich School of Politics , history and art history at the University of Munich and studied Scandinavian and Old Germanic from 1962 to 1968 in Gothenburg . Polt speaks fluent Swedish and has performed with a Swedish-language stage program a. a. before King Carl XVI. Gustaf up.

After his return to Munich, Polt worked as a translator, teacher and interpreter . Today Polt lives in Neuhaus ( Schliersee municipality ). He has been married since 1971 and has one son.

Polt began his career with a radio play production for the Hessischer Rundfunk, As if one were a badger in his building. In it he played the roles of more than 30 different people who were driven out of their ancestral surroundings, Munich's Amalienstraße, through urban redevelopment measures . Polt made his first stage appearance in 1975 with the cabaret program of the Kleine Nachtrevue in Munich's Kleine Freiheit . This was followed by great audiences at the Münchner Kammerspiele (including Diridari and Tschurangrati ), which he realized with the director Hanns Christian Müller and in which a. a. and Dieter Hildebrandt , Otto Grünmandl and Gisela Schneeberger participated.

Polt became known to a larger audience through his twelve-part sketch series Fast wia in real life . His partner in these programs produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk and broadcast for the first time in 1979 was Gisela Schneeberger. This was followed (also in collaboration with Hanns-Christian Müller) films such as Kehraus , One speaks German and Germanikus .

In 1979, a manuscript by Polt for the program Einwurf aus der Kulisse was cut by the editors of ZDF by some critical passages about Friedrich Zimmermann ("Old Oath Hand"). Polt reciprocated a year later at the awarding of the German Cabaret Prize, which was broadcast by ZDF. Since he had again been forbidden to mention Zimmermann, he filled the 10 minutes allotted to him as the prizewinner for a speech by remaining silent and only sporadically pointing out how many minutes of his speaking time had already passed. Also in 1980 he appeared as a guest in the first episode of The Windshield Wiper , where he again referred to the dispute with ZDF. He spoke about satire on television and quoted the program director as saying, "The satire should not be excessive in reflecting reality."

In his roles, Polt often plays the narrow-minded and less reflective citizen who expresses his opinion with great ease. He also likes to make use of certain clichés: the intolerance of Germans (“tolerance is not a German term”), German xenophobia (“the Asians don't dirty”). But intellectuals, the nouveau riche, civil servants and politicians are also pointedly portrayed by him.

Polt performed many of his stage appearances together with the Biermösl Blosn .

In 1990 he worked together with Biermösl Blosn on the Toten Hosen album Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück . At the end of 2005 he toured with Die Toten Hosen and Biermösl Blosn through various theaters and opera houses and played the Abvent program under the direction of Hanns Christian Müller . On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the Literaturhaus Munich staged an exhibition from March 2 to July 15, 2012 with the title Braucht's des ?! - Gerhard Polt for his 70th (curator: Sandra Wiest).
