On the crusade to happiness Learning English Lesson One
(1991)

On the crusade into happiness , actually 125 years Die Toten Hosen on the crusade into happiness is a double album by the band Die Toten Hosen . The title refers approximately to the added age of the band members when the album was created. The album was produced by Jon Caffery and first released on May 21, 1990 through Virgin Records .

In addition to twelve new compositions and three cover versions, the two recordings contain a selection of pieces of music that the band had already released in the past and some of which have been re-recorded. The final is the satirical play Willi - a loser , a collaboration with Gerhard Polt .

On the crusade into happiness , the band's first album reached number one in the German charts.

Emergence

At the time the album was recorded, Die Toten Hosen played in the formation of Andreas von Holst and Michael Breitkopf on electric guitars , Andreas Meurer on electric bass and Wolfgang Rohde on drums. They were mainly responsible for the compositions , while Campino , singer and front man of the band wrote most of the lyrics. The recording and mixing took place mainly under the direction of Jon Caffery in the studios of Dieter Dierks in Stommeln and in the sound workshop in Düsseldorf.

On the recordings for Trilogy Willi - a loser were Gerhard Polt and the Biermösl Blosn involved, which the band at the demonstration against the planned nuclear reprocessing plant in Wackersdorf had met in July 1986th The recordings were made under the direction of Hanns Christian Müller in his recording studio in Bavaria.

With the pieces First Time by The Boys and New Guitar in Town by The Lurkers , the band recorded English-language tracks for the first time for an album, accompanied by an original artist as a guest musician. Honest John Plain plays guitar and is the author of both songs, which were released in the late 1970s as part of the punk movement in Britain. Monique Maasen from the Düsseldorf band Asmodi Bizarr was a singer in the background in First Time . The music tracks were recorded in Düsseldorf within two days.

Design of cover and booklet

The album cover, designed by Andreas Kopp, resembles a painting depicting the end of a battle in which Napoleon was forced to retreat. According to Campino, the original scene comes from a history book he worked with in class. Only the heads would have been replaced.

The picture shows the musicians in a bleak, snowy landscape under a gray cloudy sky. While Andreas von Holst and Wolfgang Rohde kneeled freezing and praying, Andreas Meurer points forward with an outstretched arm, Campino is swinging with his uniform torn off, the tattered flag with the boned eagle, the band's emblem, and Michael Breitkopf is sitting next to a dead man Horse with the gun at the ready. The bodies of Jimi Hendrix , Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious lie behind them in the snow. John Lennon's glasses hang on a dead branch .

The first part of the double album includes the two cover versions in English, ten of the band's own previously unreleased songs in German, all of which are written from a first-person perspective . The almost two-minute instrumental intro Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück is based on the music of Ennio Morricone .

The first song Everything will be fine with the hymn-like chorus “We are on the way into a new millennium, soon miracles will be produced on the assembly line. On the way into a new millennium, everything will change overnight, a brave new world ”refers to the political change and the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989.

Glückpiraten is a string of insults a man confronts his teenage son with.

The song five to twelve is a clear statement against xenophobia and right-wing extremism . It was important for the band not to use irony in this song, but to make their point of view clear, after the ironic text of the song Ülüsü from the album Opel-Gang had often been misunderstood.

Money $ Gold is a song about greed . The song to be or not to be is about suicide . In matchstick man is about pyromania and no chance for love is a complaint about the sexual indifference of the partner.

In All All These Years, the narrator meets an old friend on the street who no longer recognizes him.

The Opel Gang Part II - In the tropics of the Opels , the style of the drums pays homage to the band Twisted Sister , and the guitar solo in the middle of the piece is based on AC / DC .

The sound carrier ends with the piece of music Schönen Gruß, auf Wiederseh'n , which has been part of the band's live program since 1986 but has never been released before. The song describes the end of a party that teenagers had organized in the "storm-free booth" when their parents unexpectedly come home.

The second part of the album contains, in addition to the songs 1,000 needles , which deal with the subject of depression and The Order , re-releases of B-sides of previous singles, reinterpretations of well-known songs and cover versions.

It begins with a remix of the single Hip Hop Bommi Bop from December 1983, followed by the track Achterbahn, which was released in 1988 on the B-side of the single Here Comes Alex .

Excerpt from roller coaster audio sample ? / iAudio file / audio sample

Roller coaster consists of an intro, three stanzas with six lines each and a refrain that is repeated three times. The refrain are the sentences: “Clear the way - get out of the way. If you want to help, say a prayer, ”repeated twice each time. The melody is catchy and the electric guitar accompaniment consists of hammered eighth notes throughout.

The song More of it from the album A Little Bit of Horror Show was re-recorded in a reggae version. The interpretations of Dear players and Opel-course in the country music style were with the recording of Never Mind The Hosen - The Red Roses Here's arisen and the single appeared already in 1987 as a B-side All the girls want to kiss .

Before the hit Azzuro , which Adriano Celentano made famous in the sixties, a simple cassette recording of the visit of the band members was switched to the snack bar Jet-Grill . You can hear the exchange of words when ordering and then receiving the food.

The cabaret play Willi - a loser is based on the song Willi muss ins Heim , which was first published on Die Toten Hosen's debut album Opel-Gang . Additional pieces of music from the band and texts by Gerhard Polt made it a story. The Biermösl Blosn also supports with Bavarian house music .

The plot: Willi's parents cannot cope with the difficult child, and when one day he tears up his little sister's hamster, they push him to the reform home , where they simply forget him. Once Willi ran away and looked for his uncle, who immediately sent him back to the home. At Christmas he hopes in vain for visitors, a letter or a parcel. Even on the day of his release, nobody waits for him, so he crashes, takes drugs and ends up in a sect, which soon rejects him again. He doesn't get a “reasonable” job, so in the end he has no other option but to become a police officer.

Singles

The crucifixion of Christ,
Peter Paul Rubens

The front cover of the single Alles wird gut , which was released before the album Easter 1990, shows an excerpt from Rubens' painting The Crucifixion of Christ in a modified form. The paper that hangs on the neck of the crucified Christ is marked: “D. T. H. Everything will be fine ”, provided. Carl Klinkhammer was indignant in the star : “That is blasphemy! Instead of being awesome, these people sink into dirt and grime. ”As additional titles, the single contains the music titles television , dream woman and high school graduation .

The cover of the single Azzurro, designed by Michael Roman , shows skeletons at a soccer game and came on the market in yellow, green and pink. The B-side contains the songs: Congratulations , Dr. Summer and enemies .

The third single released, also in 1990, was the music title All the whole years . On the B-side of the vinyl edition is a cover version of the song Yeah, Yeah, Yeah , which was originally released by The Revillos in 1980. The CD edition of the single also contains the music titles Before the storm and Old town back and forth .

Music videos

The clip for Azzurro was shot by Hanns Christian Müller on the occasion of the Soccer World Cup in Italy and satirically examines the behavior of Germans abroad. According to the script, the band drives to Italy in an Opel (registration number: D-TH 1990 ). The car starts immediately for the first time when it is stolen at the end of the film.

The film for All the whole years was also shot in 1990 in a photo studio in Düsseldorf under the direction of Walter Knofel . The band plays in brightly colored clothes in a white room. Amplifiers and guitar systems are painted in bright colors on the walls. The words All are lined up on the floor all year long with black letter blocks. A lettering on the bass drum Smash it Up! indicates that this product is based on the video for the song of the same name by punk band The Damned from 1979.

tour

As part of the tour under the name Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück , the band played in August 1990 on the Weißensee Radrennbahn in Berlin, in the Schweriner Stadthalle and in the Münsterland Hall in Münster . In September she gave concerts in the Cologne sports hall , played in Leipzig, in the Weser-Ems-Halle in Oldenburg , in Hanover in the Eilenriedehalle , in Kaunitz in the Ostwestfalenhalle , in Siegen in the Siegerlandhalle , in the town halls of Lichtenfels and Offenbach , in the Ostseehalle in Kiel , on the Northeimer Waldbühne, in Augsburg , in Ravensburg , in Neumarkt in the Jura-Hallen , in Würzburg , in Landshut and in Passau . Die Toten Hosen played on September 27, 1990 in the sold-out Westfalenhalle 1 in Dortmund , the next day in the Völklingen sports hall and on September 29 in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart . Other venues in October were the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , the Hamburg sports hall, the tent in the Donaupark in Vienna and a festival tent in Hall in Tirol . John Plain also traveled with the album during the tour to accompany the band on the cover versions of his songs. Other guests such as The Lurkers and Peter and the Test Tube Babies also played on the tour before they went to London for the first time for two concerts.

Chart successes and awards

The double LP Auf dem Kreuzzug ins Glück was the group's first album Die Toten Hosen, which was listed at number one in the German music charts. It also reached the top 20 in the neighboring countries of Austria and the top 10 in the hit parade in Switzerland. In Germany, the album was awarded a platinum record . In a post on Facebook on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the album's release, the band commented on this success in retrospect on June 11, 2020: “ Somehow we weren't ready to enjoy such a moment. Hardly any of our musical role models had ever been in such a situation and therefore there was hardly a band with a similar background, from which we could have orientated ourselves how to deal with it now. It wasn't until the tour that went with it started that we realized that things had changed. Everything got bigger, wilder and crazier by a few turns. "

With the re-release of the vinyl version in July 2020, it re-entered the German charts at number 4, at number 30 in Austria and at number 22 in Switzerland.

Press

Hollow Skai wrote in Stern in June 1990 that the lyrics on the new LP would continue to "bring the attitude towards life of many young people to the point" and "the 1, 2, 3, 4 - noise of the Lurkers and the Boys", the band and would still be closer to their fans than "the gentle rustling of a Sydney Youngblood or designer rock from the pop band ABC ". That is why “twelve to thirteen year old kids who would only know the Sex Pistols from the stories of their older siblings” or “ have read about punks in an old Bravo and would prefer to be some too” flocked to the concerts .

Peter Wagner in the Musikexpress from July 1990, however, considers the new songs to be much more important. He writes: “Excellent saw guitars produced at an international level, Campino with significantly more melodic vocals and precisely those catchy refrain melodies that colleagues like Guns n 'Roses have always been looking for, lead the pants crusade to a grand victory: The With this double pack, Toten Hosen establish themselves as the best rock 'n' roll band in the nation. "

Thomas Hüetlin wrote in Tempo shortly after the 1990 World Cup : “For Die Toten Hosen, music has never been anything other than the continuation of football by other means. Her songs contain the energy of a tough duel and the dynamics of a penalty shoot-out after 90 minutes. They rock the way the Irish national team plays: simple, straightforward and with a big punch at the end. […] Die Toten Hosen are the best German rock band since the eleven men who won the 1974 World Cup. Her new double album is only surpassed by a ball wriggling in the net. "

Markus Hartmann from Zillo certified the album in an article from July 1990: "Critical texts, clear statements on serious topics, sophisticated humor, and music that is more mature and professional than ever."

In 1993, Edgar Klüsener wrote in the January issue of Metal Hammer magazine that the band had recorded a “monster double album” with 'Ein Kreuzzug ins Glück', “which contained a lot from verbal slapstick to tough rock hammers to rap and musical elements at first glance didn't seem at all typical for the boys. "

In his 2007 biography of Die Toten Hosen, Hollow Skai states: "Hardly any album covers the entire spectrum of pants as this crusade into happiness."

In its article about the albums of the Toten Hosen in 2012, RP Online summarizes: “With their most varied work, the Toten Hosen have made it into the Pop Olympus and at number 1 in the charts. Adriano Celentano's 'Azzuro', hip-hop, reggae, country nothing is certain. The recording of a visit to a snack bar ('Im Jet-Grill') turns into a real satire, which Gerhard Polt and Biermösl Blosn only barely surpass. "

New edition 2007

At the end of 2007, all pieces were remastered, the cover and booklet revised and additional graphics by Michael Roman were added. Jan Weiler has written a new, second leaflet that contains an interview with the band.
