Only to visit , actually only to visit: Die Toten Hosen unplugged in Vienna's Burgtheater is a concert album by the band Die Toten Hosen . It was recorded on September 1 and 2, 2005 as part of the MTV Unplugged series at the Burgtheater in Vienna , produced by Jon Caffery and released on November 18, 2005 on the band's own label, JKP . The album reached the top ten positions in the album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and was awarded two platinum records for more than 100,000 records sold by 2010.
Design of cover and booklet
Cover photo and booklet, designed by Dirk Rudolph, show an exterior view of the Burgtheater, black and white portraits of the musicians, the stage sets and the view from the stage into the audience during the event, recorded by Donata Wenders .
Emergence
The band has been on a concert tour since the spring of 2004, supported by the music broadcaster MTV Germany , under the motto Eat or die . In addition, a 16-part television series called Friss oder dies at the end of 2004 ran about Die Toten Hosen on MTV. It was obvious the band that joined the artists who are already in the project Unplugged (Engl. Without power ) of the transmitter MTV were involved.
The audience on both evenings in the Burgtheater consisted to a large extent of invited guests. The few tickets for the public were issued by the band through a lottery .
The new arrangements for Die Toten Hosen were written by Hans Steingen , with whom the band has been working since 1996 and the album Opium fürs Volk . At the time of the recording, the band consisted of the guitarists Andreas von Holst and Michael Breitkopf , who switched completely to acoustic guitars for the event ; von Holst plays a banjo in some pieces . Furthermore from the bass player Andreas Meurer , who plays an acoustic bass guitar , and the drummer Vom Ritchie . The singer and front man of the Campino group occasionally uses a kazoo . Andreas von Holst supports him with singing in the background. The guest musicians Raphael Zweifel and Esther Kim supported the five-piece band on cello , piano and accordion .
According to the rules of the MTV Unplugged Concerts, the musicians should sit on chairs throughout the show. Campino, who is usually in constant motion on stage, couldn't get used to that. At the end a large travel box was set up on which the singer could lean half-standing: “For me, singing while sitting is actually forbidden. In 23 years I haven't even sat down in the rehearsal room. The stomach must be able to breathe. The flight case was an acceptable compromise, ”he said in an interview with Birgit Fuß in Rolling Stone in December 2005.
The concerts were recorded under the direction of Jon Caffery from Heinen Mobile Studios. The mixing took place in Studios 301 in Cologne and the final mastering took place in the Monoposto Studio in Düsseldorf.

A concert film was directed by Paul Shyvers and was released on DVD on December 2, 2005. The film shows ten pieces of music that were played at the event but are not available on CD; including Bonnie & Clyde as country music , Call of the Wild a collaboration with TV Smith and Madeleine (from Lüdenscheid) , the text of which is from Funny van Dannen. The end is the swan song of the audience with You'll Never Walk Alone , the Liverpool FC anthem with which the band has been saying goodbye to the audience at every live concert for decades.
The DVD also contains a documentary entitled The Long Way to Vienna by director Stefan Kloos about the creation of the album. This includes the group's eight weeks of preparation for the event, first in their own rehearsal room in Düsseldorf, later a rehearsal in Gate 3 , before the band traveled to Vienna. Short interviews with the band members and the team are shown, as well as various outtakes . Kloos recorded Campino's introductory words that he addressed to the audience before the start of the event and the associated camera and sound recordings. Campino played a Viennese waltz on an electric piano .

Manfred Glamowski stated in the January 2006 issue of Rock Hard magazine that “well-known blasts like 'Here comes Alex' and 'Nothing stays for eternity' work amazingly well even without electric guitars” and “the bitter 'Bad Wolf' thanks to the soft instrumentation become even more haunting ”. The sound is "crystal clear, but the live feeling leaves something to be desired". Glamowski suspected that "this could be due to the atmosphere in the seated, venerable Vienna Burgtheater".
The reviewer in the Kulturnews saw the album as a "contrast between high and punk culture, which becomes even clearer on the DVD". Olaf Neumann wrote for the magazine Pyranha in December 2005: “Anyone who has always been deterred by the roaring choirs of the Toten Hosen could now be attracted to their acoustic gems. The band has never sounded as vulnerable as it does today. ”Neumann was particularly impressed by the new versions of Pushed again , I am the longing in you and The Last Kiss . They would "send pleasant shivers down the spine of the inclined listener".
Markus Bellmann chalked up on the internet portal Plattentests.de that a few songs would be “rather unexciting”, but admits that “the 'Unplugged' experiment” “definitely paid off” for the band. "Avoiding crooked wandering guitar tinkling" would "show the gentlemen that as musicians and composers they are no longer punk in the old sense of the word".
Henning Richter wrote in the Musikexpress in January 2006 that the band Die Toten Hosen would “split the rock nation”. After weighing the pros and cons, mainly referring to the side that the band chalked up to commercial success and popularity, he came to a 4: 2 result in favor of the album. Richter wrote a review of the album for Metal Hammer magazine in February 2006. He found it “not so exciting” that “many of the acoustic arrangements are taken over from the electronic versions”. On the other hand, he found ice-cold Bommerlunder as "bar swing" entertaining and he thought Opel-Gang as a piano ballad and Here comes Alex as a thoughtful chanson was "successful" .
