Pushed Again is an English rock song by the music group Die Toten Hosen . The music comes from Michael Breitkopf . The text, which is about oppression and the desire for self-determination, is a collaboration between Campino and the English musician T. V. Smith . The song was produced by Jon Caffery and released for the first time as a single by the JKP label on January 5, 1998. The title was number four in Germany, number twenty in Austria and number ten in the Swiss charts .

Emergence

Pushed Again developed Die Toten Hosen in the spring of 1997 during a concert tour in Argentina . Under the name My Head , the band presented the original version of the song on June 28, 1997 at their 1000th concert in the sold-out Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf . At this anniversary concert, a sixteen-year-old girl from the Netherlands suffocated in the crowd in front of the stage. After that, Die Toten Hosen temporarily withdrew from the public eye.

Before she appeared as a member of the Vans Warped Tour in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the USA for the first time for fourteen concerts in front of a manageable audience in January 1998, the single Pushed Again was released in Germany on January 5, 1998 . The lyrics of the song had meanwhile been edited with the help of T.V. Smith. The song was recorded in the Skyline Tonfabrik in Düsseldorf; the mixing and the final mastering took place in Dieter Dierks' studio . As a further collaboration with T. V. Smith, the single contains the song Revenge and the two German-language songs flies and everything is one . The entire record is dedicated to Rieke Lax, who died on June 28, 1997 in the Rheinstadion.

text

Pushed Again is written from a first-person perspective . The lyrical ego feels pressured, cannot bear the pressure that weighs on it and does not want to be dependent any longer. According to Campino, Pushed Again is "[...] a hard psycho song about a guy who is in the hospital and doesn't feel like his old life anymore."

The song is structured according to the classic verse-chorus scheme, with the four stanzas and the chorus each consisting of four lines , and the closing syllables of the second and fourth verses rhyme ( cross rhyme ). The first, second and third verse is the chorus: “ I'm feeling pushed again - feeling pushed again. " attached.

The refrain always begins with the question: “ Why can't you just leave me alone? ”, But varies on the following lines. The first refrain after the second verse ends with: “ Solitude is a faithful friend. Turn the lights off - I'm not home, can't you see, I don't need your help? "When the chorus returns after the third verse, it says:" You're dragging me right to the edge. I've got to go when you jerk my rope, I don't know where the good times went. ”And after the last stanza the chorus ends with“ Solitude is a faithful friend. I'll sort my life out on my own, I just want this pressure to end.

A transition to the fourth verse, which says: “ It's getting more than I can take, it's like a band tightening around my head. If you keep pushing, something's going to break, it's making me think, I'd be better off dead. ”Form the sentences:“ And I'm sick of this pain in my head. And I'm scared, I'm being pushed - being pushed again. “These two sentences are taken up again at the end of the song and repeated twice.

music

The instruments used in rock music are used for the first release. The electric guitars are played by Michael Breitkopf and Andreas von Holst , the electric bass is played by Andreas Meurer and the drummer is Wolfgang Rohde . Campino's vocals are supported by the backing vocals by T.V. Smith. The band members sing the chorus together.

The three and a half minute song follows the classification: intro , first and second verse, first chorus , interlude, third verse, second chorus, transition, guitar solo, fourth verse, third chorus, coda . A simple riff in E minor introduces the song with four bars.

Campino then quietly sings the first verse with the words: “ Whispering voices in my head, sounds like they're calling my name. ”Begins. You can hear Campino's voice many times because the recordings in the recording studio were superimposed several times with slight delays ( automatic double tracking ). The riff from the intro accompanies the melody part in all stanzas and also forms a recurring motif in the interlude.

In the last four bars of the verses, a second electric guitar plays the chords C major and D 9 , supported by the drums. The riff is played from one verse to the other with increasing intensity, and in the course of the song it is doubled with a second, more distorted guitar. Campino's vocals also get louder and more aggressive from one verse to the next, supported by the choir of the entire band.

The nine-bar guitar solo, performed by Andreas von Holst, is based on a few notes that fade long after the attack. Due to the echo effect that is on the electric guitar, you can also hear up to five repetitions of the motifs. In the fourth verse, the band plays the same melody in unison ; the bass an octave lower than the guitars.

A version of Pushed Again with acoustic instruments, arranged by Hans Steingen , was created in 2005 for the MTV Unplugged series . In addition to the guitars , bass guitar and drums, which had meanwhile been taken over by Vom Ritchie , the band was supported at the events in the Vienna Burgtheater by guest musicians Esther Kim on piano and Raphael Zweifel on cello .
