Edificio El Ateneo
The Edificio El Ateneo is a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .
The building, which opened on July 18, 1900 as a result of a project from 1897, is located in the Barrio Centro at Plaza Cagancha 1157 , corner of Avenida Gral. Rondeau 1388 . The architects Julián Masquelez and José María Claret were responsible for the construction . The facade design goes back to the architect Emilio Boix . Around 1916 the assembly hall was built by the architects J. Vilamajó and H. Azzarini and JL Zorrilla de San Martín . The Edificio El Ateneo serves as the seat of the Ateneo de Montevideo. It belongs to the style of historical eclecticism . The Edificio El Ateneo was classified as a Monumento Histórico Nacional on August 21, 1975 on the basis of resolution 1397/975 .
