The Beatsteaks are a German alternative rock / punk band from Berlin that has existed since 1995 . You are under contract with Warner Music . The band is one of the most commercially successful punk rock bands in Germany, along with other bands such as Die Ärzte and Die Toten Hosen .

Band history

Peter Baumann, Stephan Hirche, Alexander Rosswaag and Bernd Kurtzke founded the Beatsteaks in 1995. Shortly afterwards, Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß joined the band as a singer and additional guitarist. During the Boombox tour in 2011, singer Arnim stated that the song Territorial Pissings by Nirvana was the initial spark for founding the band. However, the band made it clear in an interview that it was a matter of an "information reduction" that did not exactly correspond to the facts. In 1996 the young band won a local music competition in SO36 and was allowed to appear as the opening act at the Berlin Sex Pistols concert . This was also the tenth band appearance at all.

The Beatsteaks named their first album, recorded in 1997, after the house number of their rehearsal room, 48/49 . It still contains several German songs, while the newer albums are in English. In 1999, their second album, Launched , was released on the American punk label Epitaph Records . At that time, the drums were already being played by Thomas Götz. There was a change on bass in 2000 and Torsten Scholz joined the band for Alexander Rosswaag. This was followed by joint tours with Bad Religion , Die Ärzte , Donots and Die Toten Hosen on their eat or die tour in 2005, which allowed them to introduce themselves to a wider audience.

In 2002, the third album, Living Targets , was released, for which the Beatsteaks released their first singles Let Me In and Summer , which was also heard for the first time on radio and television. At the end of 2002 the band played a concert in Berlin's Columbiahalle and recorded an EP for this purpose , which was given to every concert-goer. That living room EP was the band's first collaboration with producer Moses Schneider .

The Beatsteaks were mentioned in 2003 by the band Die Ärzte in their song Unrockbar with the words “How can you sit still with the Beatsteaks when pop singers bring tears to your eyes?”, Which further increased their popularity. Die Toten Hosen covered their song Hand in Hand for the album Nur zu Visiting , which was released in 2005.

The breakthrough came in 2004 with the album Smack Smash , especially with their second single I Don't Care as Long as You Sing . At the MTV Europe Music Awards 2004 they won in the category Best German Act . At the end of 2005, the double DVD B-side was released , which contains a self-produced documentary about the band's history and a compilation of several concerts as well as the music videos produced by the band up to that point in time. In 2006 the Beatsteaks played a short summer tour comprising three concerts and two festivals. After the release of the pre-single Jane Became Insane on March 9, 2007, the album Limbo Messiah was released on March 30, 2007. This album also includes the later released singles Cut Off the Top , Demons Galore and Meantime .

On June 7th, 2007 the band performed at the concert “ Your voice against poverty ” in Rostock in front of 70,000 spectators and a month later, on July 7th, 2007, they played their biggest concert up to then in the sold-out Berlin Kindl-Bühne Wuhlheide around 17,000 viewers. In the same year they were nominated again in the category Best German Act at the EMAs and were awarded the 1 Live Krone Listener Prize for the best live act. They received this award again in 2008. In 2011 they won the award for best band at the 1 Live Krone.

On May 2, 2008, a double live album was released under the name Kanonen auf Spatzen , which includes two CDs and a DVD. After their tour of Limbo Messiah ended in August 2008, the Beatsteaks took a break to write new songs afterwards.

At the end of December 2009 the Beatsteaks were confirmed as headliners for the Southside Festival and the Hurricane Festival 2010 as well as for Nova Rock .
