Boombox is the sixth studio album by the Beatsteaks . It was released on January 28, 2011 by Warner Music. The album immediately reached number one in the German album charts, bringing the band to the top of the German charts for the first time.
Origin and style
Regarding the album title, guitarist Bernd Kurtzke said the band had written different titles on a wall in the rehearsal room:
"I think Peter wrote" Boombox "in small letters on it at some point, not even in the expectation that anyone would be interested. It also corresponds exactly to what we're doing right now. five people in a box, and it's booming, right? We also listen to the rough mixes that come in every day on a boombox, that is, on such a small ghetto blaster. This is such a reference monitoring for us, if it sounds good, it works on every shitty system in the world. "
Bassist Torsten Scholz stated that the Beatsteaks had consistently dealt with the individual songs: “While the last record contained maybe two or three songs in one, we pulled it through more consistently with this record. The things are maybe a bit more pop and catchy when you first hear them, but they are relatively complex in themselves. "
The style of Boombox is much quieter than its predecessor Limbo Messiah , only Bullets from Another Dimension and Behavior with fast drums and a high tempo are a bit similar to the style of the previous album, which was strongly influenced by fast and aggressive punk rock. It is very noticeable that many songs on Boombox are written in 3/4 or 6/8 time, so these songs have their own, unusual style that the Beatsteaks had never heard before.
As with the previous albums, some band members have taken over some vocal parts, so Peter Baumann sings a few stanzas in Under a Clear Blue Sky and Bernd Kurtzke sings the entire song Behavior . The reason for this is that several voices made the music on an album more colorful, as singer Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß said in an interview.
reception
Josef Gasteiger from Laut.de gave the album four out of five stars and wrote: “You can't get rid of the feeling as if the quintet now has the necessary self-confidence to stop being behind a lot of speed and (don't say punk!) To have to hide noise. ”The album will be remembered in a short time. He summed up: " Doctors or not, with the" Boombox "the rock throne in Berlin finally belongs to the Beatsteaks!" The online portal Plattentests.de awarded 7 out of 10 points and saw Boombox as a worthy successor to Limbo Messiah : "'Boombox 'has become another great album. "
Singles
The first single Milk & Honey was released on January 14, 2011 as a maxi CD and was made available as a download on December 3, 2010. The sheet music for the song had already been released months before, as the Beatsteaks had called for the song to be played and a version of its own to be released. Ultimately, the band had selected the two best cover versions and released them on the single. On March 25, 2011, Cheap Comments was released as the second single. On July 1, 2011, the third single Automatic was released, on which you can find several cover songs and versions of Automatic in addition to the song itself.
