Smack Smash is the fourth studio album by the Beatsteaks . Thanks to the producer Moses Schneider, the production is more professional than on the previous albums, even if the songs were only recorded live in the studio and sound accordingly rough.

Emergence

Work on the new album began in March 2003 in the rehearsal room in Berlin. The first recordings were made in October 2003 in the Mamasweed studio in Berlin, where the “foundation” (Teutoburg-Weiß) for the album was created. It continued in Studio Saal 4, where Atomic Love was created, and, still in October 2003, in the K4 studio, where Hello Joe was created as a tribute to The Clash singer Joe Strummer . In December 2003 the recordings were continued in the Berlin transporter room and finished again in the Mamasweed studio. All five band members contributed to the composition and lyrics of all songs.

meaning

MTV presenter Markus Kavka comments on the video premiere hand in hand with the words: "I am not afraid to say that with this album the Beatsteaks are finally becoming the well-deserved superstars that they should have been for a long time" . In fact, the album reached number 11 in the German album charts and gave the Beatsteaks their breakthrough. The videos for Hand in Hand and I Don't Care as Long as You Sing , the first two singles, each reached the top spot in the TRL charts on MTV . Due to the surprising success of Smack Smash and the large number of new fans, the Beatsteaks played several tours that took them through Germany and neighboring countries several times until the end of 2005. On November 23, 2005, Smack Smash was released in Japan through Solitary Man Records .

At the time of release, the band found the album to be their most successful, but also hardest, work to date. On the release of the follow-up album Limbo Messiah in March 2007, singer Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß said in retrospect about the success of Smack Smash : “The success came at exactly the right moment for us; he couldn't turn our heads too much anymore. He rather pushed you further. Then I just said to myself: “It really seems to be your religion.” When the success hit us, we laughed rather broken that we suddenly ran everywhere. [...] Suddenly it all went by itself, and that with the album that we made from our guts. "

Singles

The video for the first single Hand in Hand was made in early 2004 under the direction of Daniel Harder . He also produced the second video, I Don't Care as Long as You Sing , which helped the band make their final breakthrough on music television . It was shot at various locations in Berlin and at the two Beatsteaks concerts in the Columbiahalle in May 2004. These two performance videos were followed by Hello Joe, a video with more action, with the participation of Jürgen Vogel and directed by Zoran Bihać .
