Elisabeth Selbert Prize

The Elisabeth Selbert Prize has been awarded by the Hessian state government since 1983. It recognizes outstanding academic achievements that promote understanding of the special situation of women in society. Elisabeth Selbert is known as one of the four “ mothers of the Basic Law ”, especially for the development and implementation of the principle of equal rights in the Federal German constitution . In addition, she was involved in the creation of the Hessian constitution and advocated women's rights on numerous other constitutional issues. In the post-war period she helped to build a democratic judiciary. The award was initiated by Inge Sollwedel .

Until 2003, the prize was awarded annually and only to women living in Hesse , since then every two years and to men and women living nationwide. Since 2005 there have been new guidelines. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros.
