Serap Çileli (born January 29, 1966 in Mersin , Turkey ) is a German publicist and human rights activist of the Alevi denomination. She is known for her work against the tolerance of human rights violations by Muslim - Orthodox immigrants.

Life

In her autobiography “We are your daughters, not your honor” (first published in 1999), Serap Çileli describes her life story as a guest worker child of the first generation. In the late 1960s, her parents came to Germany, where they brought Serap Çileli and her five siblings in 1974. Here she finished her school days. At the age of twelve (1978) she was forcibly engaged to a man whom her parents had chosen and whom she did not know. She initially escaped this fate only by attempting suicide. At the age of 15, her parents engaged her again to a man ten years older than her and took her to Turkey . Only after seven years did she get her parents' consent to divorce the unwanted and unhappy marriage. Since then, she has been under the constant control of her parents, who were planning a forced engagement as early as 1992. When she heard this, decided Serap Cileli from parental heteronomy break out, and fled with her two children in a women's shelter . Today Çileli lives in Germany with the husband of her choice and their children.

She has been campaigning for the rights of Muslim women for over ten years. With her educational work, Serap Çileli fights for the public's attention for this problem. Today she has become a sought-after expert and advisor for other Turkish women in need. Her main focus is on educating people about so-called honor killings and forced marriages . According to his own statements, Serap Çileli looked after over 300 girls and boys who were threatened by domestic violence, forced marriage and honor killing:

“Over 300 women and girls (90% Turkish women of the 3rd generation) between the ages of twelve and 49 and 28 young Turkish men between the ages of 16 and 48. The average age of women is between 16 and 21 years. The majority of the cases I have dealt with concern the subjects of forced marriage and "restoration of virginity", but about 40 incest victims also turned to me. More than half of those seeking help had already attempted suicide once. "

In 2005, Serap Çileli was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her long-standing and exceptional commitment, making her one of the youngest women to receive this honor in German history. In October 2009 she received the Elisabeth Selbert Prize of the State of Hesse in Wiesbaden, endowed with 10,000 euros .

On the initiative of Serap Çilelis, the association peri - Association for Human Rights and Integration e. V. founded. The main work of the association is the promotion of integration and the protection of human rights .   • the trial of Isa Sh. This 23-year-old German-Afghan (who grew up in Germany and a student) stabbed his pregnant ex-girlfriend Jolin S. from behind on February 15, 2013. In March 2014, the Wiesbaden district court sentenced him to life imprisonment. The public prosecutor's office demanded that a “particular gravity of the guilt” be established (also to make it impossible to be released on probation after 15 years); the judge did not do this.

criticism

Through her work, Serap Çileli is confronted with severe criticism from Muslim circles, from where she receives insults almost every day, among other things as “traitor” and “polluter”. Hürriyet Campaign 2005

In 2005, the Turkish tabloid Hürriyet published an article with the wedding photo of Serap Çilelis' forced marriage and described her biography as a lie. Serap Çileli commented on the publication of the recordings:

Controversy in the Kardelen case in 2009

On January 15, 2009, the body of only eight-year-old Kardelen K. was discovered on the Möhnesee , who had been sexually abused and suffocated by Ali K. in Paderborn . Ali K. was sentenced to life imprisonment. Serap Çileli publicly expressed the cautious assumption that the perpetrator could also be a Turk (which later turned out to be correct); the Turkish newspapers Hürriyet , Sabah and Zaman took this as an opportunity to criticize them heavily. The Turkish-born author Hatice Akyün has accused Çileli of using the deed to increase the distrust between Turks and Germans. In an interview with the FAZ on February 9, 2009, she commented in detail on the events:

“My formulations were not geared towards the fate of Kardelen K. and her family. Rather, we know from scientific studies that rapists and sex murderers are predominantly men from the girls' social environment. [...] I am really happy that there is now a suspect, no matter what nationality he is. [...] I would like to say to the seemingly integrated Turkish educated citizens and the Turkish media that in a democracy one also has to endure different points of view and cannot be constantly outraged.
