Seeed is a Berlin music group that is primarily active in the reggae and dancehall genres . Until the death of the singer Demba Nabé in May 2018, it consisted of eleven musicians. She won the Echo three times .

history

The band Seeed was founded in 1998 based on the concept of the “ Marching Band ” and as a “mobile reggae special task force” (see sound system ). While many of the songs for the albums were produced on the computer, the band stood out on live performances with a wide range of different instruments, especially the use of various wind instruments. In the meantime, the riddims used on albums are more focused on real instruments. The band name is made up of the musical styles S ub and D ub . The fact that SEEED is written with three E has graphic reasons and is not, as previously claimed, an abbreviation for the singers (allegedly nicknames "Enuff", "Ear" and "Eased"). According to Peter Fox, the singers never called themselves that, but this contradicts the information in the booklet of their first album.

In 2000, two years after its founding, Seeed was featured on the Kanak Attack soundtrack for the socially critical film by Lars Becker with the track Top of the City , which was published by the Warner label Downbeat . In May 2001 they were the opening act for REM in front of the Cologne Cathedral in front of 70,000 spectators . In 2002, the band had a guest appearance in Almut Ghetto's film Fickende Fisch .

Their productions are not only in Germany appeal, but also in southern Europe and since the 7 " - Vinyl -Publishing of Waterpumpee (with Anthony B ) or Shake Baby Shake (with Elephant Man ) on Jamaica . With Waterpumpee and the associated Doctor's-Darling - Riddim , Seeed became the first German-speaking band to have a hit in Trinidad and Tobago in 2002 . The great success abroad was the reason that Seeed brought out an international version of the Music Monks album . This album differs from its national counterpart mainly in the translation of the German lyrics into English. With an Africa tour, tours in France and other riddims and combinations with Jamaican artists, Seeed tried to become even better known worldwide.

HipHop Open Stuttgart 2001

On October 14, 2005, the third studio album, Next! in Germany and Austria. According to Seeed, there were more band members working as producers than just musicians on this album. As a result, the album contains several different styles. Nevertheless, it was not only liked by the fans, but also criticized. So some see this album as a step towards the mainstream and therefore worse. Others rated this album positively. In 2006 Seeed won the Bundesvision Song Contest with the song Ding . The album Next! was also released in 2006 in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Norway, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Portugal.

At the opening ceremony of the 2006 soccer World Cup in Munich, Seeed played the song Good to Know , the international version of Schwinger , and was seen by almost 1.5 billion people. The DVD Live went on sale in November 2006 . On June 7th, 2007 the band performed at the concert “ Your voice against poverty ” in Rostock. A hallmark from this time are the choreographies by Seeed, which were created under the direction of the choreographer Oceana .

In 2008, Seeed, as a co-signer of an open letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel, spoke out against the illegal file sharing of copyrighted content in a full-page advertisement in the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Tageszeitung .

After a long break, the formation started working again in the studio on a joint album in early 2010. A first song entitled Molotov was available for download on their website for several weeks for several weeks since July 8, 2011. On August 9th, the first single Wonderful Life was released on their website and on YouTube . The piece is a cover of the 1987 published eponymous piece by the musician Black . On September 30, 2011 both songs appeared together on the EP Molotov / Wonderful Life . In August 2011 Seeed appeared at four festivals: the Frequency in St. Pölten, the Highfield Festival in Großpösna, the Open Air Gampel and at Rock am See in Konstanz.

On September 28, 2012, the fourth studio album Seeed was released , which immediately hit number 1 on the German album charts when it was released. It was the band's first number one album. The first single Beautiful celebrated on August 31st in the first video premiere . On November 2, 2012, the video for the song Augenbling was released , which was released as the second single on November 16, 2012. The third single Deine Zeit was released on March 22, 2013. The music video for the single was shot on March 2, 2013 in Chemnitz during the Seeed Tour . It shows the band at a gig announced the day before via Facebook at the Karl Marx Monument . On the 2012/2013 tour Seeed was accompanied by the US drumming group "Cold Steel". In June 2014 the EP Cherry Oh was offered for sale in various download portals. The title track Cherry Oh 2014 is a cover of the track Cherry Oh Baby by Eric Donaldson.

Although singer Frank Dellé announced on August 20, 2014 that the band would not play any concerts in Germany for the time being, in late summer 2015 the band made six appearances in Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and most recently at the European premiere of the Lollapalooza Festival the Tempelhofer Feld . Seeed acted in the German version of the charity song Do They Know It's Christmas? from Band Aid , which celebrated its world premiere on November 21, 2014.

On May 31, 2018, the singer Demba Nabé died . A live tour through the German-speaking countries was announced only a short time beforehand, the large number of which overloaded the servers of the ticket portal CTS Eventim . The band decided after a pause to continue performing as Seeed. The first single Ticket, which was released in April 2019, was dedicated to Demba Nabé. The second single Lass Sie gehn was released in July 2019; shortly afterwards the band announced the album Bam Bam , which was released in October 2019. Bam Bam is oriented with diverse Deutschrap - featurings closer to hip-hop styles, but also contains usual dancehall numbers as the third single G € LD , which was published in September 2019 in advance. After the hall tour, further open air concerts were scheduled for summer 2020, including a. in the Berlin Waldbühne and the Parkbühne Wuhlheide ; after its postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the band released the single Hale-Bopp , a love song named after the comet of the same name, at the end of July 2020 .
