history
Construction and use in the GDR
Parts of the Volkspark Wuhlheide were redesigned into the Ernst Thälmann pioneer park from around 1950, following Soviet models . On the occasion of the 3rd World Youth Festival in the summer of 1951 (opening ceremony on July 27, 1951 under Lord Mayor Friedrich Ebert ), the large open-air theater was built. It was built on ramparts of rubble, on which terraced oval rows of seats for around 20,000 visitors were laid out on the inside. In order to reach the upper ring of the wall from the outside and to get to the seats on the inside, extensive open staircases were created. The necessary toilet and auxiliary buildings were built on the back of the wall in accordance with the hygiene requirements and knowledge of the time. In the following years a large number of cultural and political events took place here.
After reunification
At the beginning of the 1990s, the open-air stage was in a desolate condition and could hardly be used. Nevertheless, it has been a listed horticultural monument in reunified Berlin since August 25, 1990 .
In 1996/1997 the venue was completely renovated and modernized by the architect Werner Weickenmeier from Speyer. The stage area with a playing area of 22.5 mx 16 m received a permanent tent roof on a steel construction, in which up to 16 tons of additional load (light and sound) can be suspended. All the necessary functional and ancillary rooms, as well as the infrastructure facilities, such as toilets, power supply, emergency power generator, sales facilities, visitor benches and the like, were completely rebuilt. The reopening as Parkbühne Wuhlheide took place in June 1996 with a concert by the Brandenburg Philharmonic Potsdam.
At the beginning of 2003 the open-air stage was renamed Kindl-Bühne Wuhlheide (after the Berliner Kindl brewery ). The stage was sold by the State of Berlin, represented by the Liegenschaftsfonds Berlin, to the previous operator Parkbühne Wuhlheide GmbH at the end of August 2007 .
