The Puhdys were a German rock band . The band states that it was founded in 1969. Before that, the Puhdys had a similar cast, the so-called "Ur-Puhdys". The Puhdys are among the most famous rock bands in the GDR . After the announcement of their breakup in February 2014, the band gave their last concert in Berlin at the beginning of 2016 .

The last line-up consisted of Dieter "Machine" Birr , Peter "Hung" Meyer , Dieter "Quaster" Hertrampf , Peter "Bimbo" Rasym and Klaus Scharfschwerdt .

Band history

Before the turn

The forerunner of the group was the Udo-Wendel-Combo , founded in 1965 , which included the singer and guitarist Udo Wendel, Peter Meyer (keyboard), Harry Jeske (electric bass) and Udo Jacob (drums). After Wendel's departure in the same year, Dieter Hertrampf (guitar, vocals) completed the band, which from then on called itself after the first letters of the first names - P, U, H and D - Puhdy Quartet or from 1966 Puhdys . At first the band played dance music. Hertrampf began training as a musician in 1966 and later joined the Teisco Quartet - where he met the drummer Gunther Wosylus - and other bands. Meyer did his military service in the National People's Army from 1966 to 1968 and played in the Eggesin Music Corps . The line-up of the Puhdys changed frequently; for a short time Herbert Dreilich and - as a substitute for Meyer - Reinhard Lakomy were part of the band, which is often retrospectively referred to as the "Ur-Puhdys". Udo Jacob left the band in May 1969 and later joined Panta Rhei . After Jacob's departure, Meyer and Jeske appeared together with Dreilich and Henry and Jutta Kotowski as members of the Henry Kotowski Quintet , which had emerged from the Henry Kotowski Sextet.

In 1969 Peter Meyer and Dieter Hertrampf returned to the band, Dieter Birr (vocals, guitar) and Gunther Wosylus as drummer also joined the band. The Puhdys kept the band name. The band had their first appearance in the new line-up on November 19, 1969 in the Tivoli in Freiberg . This day was later referred to as the founding day of the Puhdys. In this concert they only played cover songs in English.

In 1970 the band was banned from performing in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district . Two cultural representatives there had complained that all texts were sung in English and that the music system's output of 200 watts was more than the usual 70 to 80 watts. "The band" didn't understand how to organize the process in such a way that "any hectic rush among the young dancers could have been avoided". As a result, the band had a discussion with the authorities. As a result, the Puhdys wrote their own songs in German, and the ban was lifted.

Stylistically, they initially leaned on hard rock models such as Deep Purple , Uriah Heep or Led Zeppelin . With their own compositions and texts by Wolfgang Tilgner and Burkhard R. Lasch , the Puhdys developed into the most successful GDR rock group of the 1970s. The Puhdys first became well known in 1971 through the programs Basar and The Central Bank on GDR television . Initiated by a call by 150 students from a vocational school in Gardelegen , the later hit Doors open to the city was shown there. In the following year, Geh dem Wind was not out of the way of the “hit of the year”.

1992 concert in Eberswalde

In 1973 the Puhdys recorded the title When a Person Lives and Go to Her, written by Peter Gotthardt and Ulrich Plenzdorf , as a score for the film Die Legende von Paul und Paula (directed by Heiner Carow ). The originally planned titles Spicks and Specks by the Bee Gees and Look Wot You Dun by Slade were deleted due to a lack of foreign currency and instead in-house productions were taken, which have a strong resemblance to the original. In the same year they could be heard and seen in the film The Second Life of Friedrich Wilhelm Georg Platow with three titles.

Also in 1973 they had their first major appearance at the X (10th) World Festival of Youth and Students in East Berlin . In 1976 they performed at the International Song Festival in Sopot . They were one of the few bands allowed to give concerts in western countries. The group had their first appearance in West Germany on November 9th, 1976 in the Hamburg factory , followed by appearances at the Festival of Youth in Dortmund and West Berlin . In 1977 they appeared as the first GDR band in the music shop of Radio Bremen . By 1977, the first two albums had a circulation of over 400,000. In 1977 Rock 'n' Roll Music , the first English-language Puhdys album, was released. It only contained cover versions by Anglo-American artists. In 1979 the song " But the grids are silent" was released , a work commissioned by GDR television for the Police Call 110 film The Last Chance . In the same year, drummer Gunther Wosylus left the band to go to the West a few years later. Klaus Scharfschwerdt came for him (ex- principle ). In 1980, the Puhdys recorded their second English-language album in London - this time with their own songs such as Far From Home . In 1981 the Puhdys gave a concert in the Waldbühne in West Berlin in front of 12,000 visitors and undertook a promotional tour through the USA.

In 1982 they were the first GDR rock band to receive the GDR National Prize ( GDR National Prize, 2nd class for art and literature).

Concert on September 2, 2005 in the Eberswalde family garden

1984 appeared on the LP The book with the title I will not forget a song that specifically contained the topic of German division and in particular the word "Germany", which was practically taboo in official GDR language usage. This song was not allowed to be played on radio or television in the GDR, but quickly became known as a "secret hymn" of the GDR under the actually false title I think of Germany . Through the nationwide transmission of the concert in Hesse Niedernhausen of 21 August 1987 RTL Plus and Tele-FAZ in cable TV , the band arrived in the Federal Republic to more and more popularity. Kurt Demmler contributed carefully anticipated turnaround poetry to her LP Neue Helden , released in 1989 .

The Puhdys were voted the GDR's most popular rock band twelve times by readers of the GDR youth magazine Neues Leben .

Some albums were sold in noteworthy editions in the Federal Republic of Germany and other western countries and brought the GDR considerable foreign currency . Until the fall of the Wall, the Puhdys had sold almost 20 million albums worldwide, more than any other GDR rock band.

Time of change until today

From 1988 to 1989 the band said goodbye with a big good-bye tour through the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany, on which they were sometimes accompanied by the Lords . In 1992 the band reunited. The Puhdys had their first appearances after the reorganization at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport and in Paderborn. They were one of the few established eastern rock bands that remained successful during this time.

The last interior minister of the GDR and then president of FC Hansa Rostock , Peter-Michael Diestel , asked the Puhdys in 1994 to write and record a club anthem. FC Hansa - We love you totally appeared and was performed at the start of the Bundesliga season 1994/95 in the Ostseestadion Rostock . Another song for a sports club was released in 1997 with Hey, wir woll'n die Eisbär'n see! for the Berlin ice hockey club Eisbären .

1997 bass man Harry Jeske left the band for health reasons and was replaced by Peter Bimbo Rasym (ex- Stern Meißen , ex- Datzu ). On June 19, 1999, in the 30th anniversary year, the Puhdys were cheered by 22,000 fans at their 3000th concert in the sold-out Waldbühne in Berlin. Dieter Birr, Dieter Hertrampf and Peter Meyer also worked in the 1999 film Comeback for Freddy Baker with Mario Adorf .

The song Eisern Union 2000 was dedicated to the Berlin soccer club 1. FC Union in 2000 . They also wrote the club anthem for SC Paderborn 07 , Heroes never give up! . The Puhdys also published commercials songs during their careers. In August 2000 the EuroSpeedway Lausitz opened its doors. On this day the song Speed Kings was officially premiered there by the Puhdys . Partners were and are, among others, Berliner Pilsner (What is good, wins through) and EWE (What is needed) , for which the Puhdys wrote and played promotional songs. Meanwhile, some of the Puhdys' children are successful musically at Bell, Book & Candle and Stamping Feet .

In the 2000s song anger will not die acts of Rammstein singer Till Lindemann with. But since the management of Rammstein was against this "help", this song was first released with Lindemann as a single (red cover) and then without him as a single (blue cover). The single with Till Lindemann is now very rare.

In 2004 the band celebrated their 35th anniversary. A year later, the studio album Alles hat seine Zeit was released . On November 6, 2006, the second Christmas album , Dezembernächte , was released, which, like December days , was only available via a special distribution channel and not in normal record stores. The album could only be purchased nationwide in branches of Telekom and the telecommunications chain _dug . The album is now also available in normal stores.

In July 2006 the Puhdys took part in the "East Rock Classic" on Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt . They played their tracks in the original versions alongside other eastern rock stars such as City , Karat , Dirk Michaelis , Werther Lohse and Ute Freudenberg . Due to many inquiries, another six Ostrock-in Klassik concerts were held in 2007 - this time with Silly , Karat, Veronika Fischer , Werther Lohse and Ute Freudenberg - in Hohenfelden , Schwarzenberg , Dresden , Hanover , Rammenau , Rostock and Berlin . The continuation of these Ostrock classical concerts took place in the summer of 2008. In addition, in the spring of 2008 the Puhdys went on an “ unplugged ” tour through some cities in Lower Saxony for the first time .

On January 1st, 2009 the Puhdys started their anniversary tour 40 Years Puhdys in the O 2 World in Berlin. The guests of the three-hour concert included the rock bands City and Karat , Michael Hirte (“Supertalent 2008” from the RTL program ) and the group De Randfichten . A recording of this concert was released on DVD in 2010. On January 2nd, 2009, the Puhdys released their new album, Abenteuer , which contains 13 songs. These songs include adventure , catchy tunes and molesters as well as the song Wenn Träume die in a new recording. The two songs Kühle Lady and Nirvana , which were previously only available as live versions, appeared for the first time as studio versions on the album. This was followed by the DVD Kultband des Ostens - The Film - The Story on February 6th. The book Adventure with the Puhdys as authors appeared a short time later. Finally, on April 20, the 33-CD box Songs for Generations (limited to 5000 copies) was released with all Puhdys albums and the DVD Das 3,000, which has not yet been released on CD . Concert and a new rarity CD. In addition, the live double CD Akustisch was released on the actual anniversary date, November 19th . The hits on the market, which includes the recording of an unplugged concert in April. Also on November 19, a Puhdys memorial stone was unveiled next to the “Tivoli” in Freiberg .

In September 2012, the Puhdys released the song Was uns connects together with the East German bands City, Karat and Pankow .

Kindl stage Wuhlheide at the Puhdys - the big farewell concert 2015

Peter Meyer indicated in November 2012 that the band is seriously considering breaking up for reasons of age, but that the decision is also dependent on the success of their new album It was nice . “If our new CD sells more than 500,000 copies by the summer of 2013, we will continue beyond the year.” At least 14th, the album reached the highest chart position for the Puhdys to date.

On November 1, 2013 Universal released the third Christmas album Holy Nights. A special feature of this album is that all new tracks, with one exception, were sung by Dieter Hertrampf. Klaus Scharfschwerdt can also be heard as a singer again for the first time in 30 years. Dieter Birr only sings the newly mixed tracks from the previous Christmas CDs. For the first time, not a single new title was composed by him.

On February 17, 2014, the management announced that the Puhdys will go on a farewell tour in 2015. Peter Meyer justified this with “We are all over 60 at the end of the month. At some point the body just won't take part any more.” The farewell tour started on October 31, 2014 in Berlin's O2-World. The last official concert of the Puhdys took place on January 2nd, 2016 in the (now renamed) Berlin Mercedes-Benz-Arena and lasted for three hours. It was recorded for television and DVD. Further appearances took place until June 2016 as part of the “Rock Legends” tour together with City and Karat, during which the band performed for the last time on June 24, 2016 in Schwarzenberg .

The DVD recording of The Last Concert achieved the highest position in the chart for the band after the fall of the Wall, at number 2 in the German album charts.

In April 2016 the band was awarded the “ Echo ” for life's work.

At the end of 2019 it became known that Dieter Birr had fallen out with the other members of the band since 2013. In the meantime, Birr is suing the court for the sole copyrights as the composer of the early Puhdys songs, for which the band has so far been specified as a composer collective.
