geography

The place, first mentioned in 1299, lies east of the widely visible, 513 m high Riechheimer Mountain at an altitude of about 340  m above sea level. NHN . The immediate area is dominated by agriculture, while there are extensive forest areas a few kilometers away in the Mittleres Ilmtal nature reserve .

history

Hohenfelden was first mentioned in 1299 in a document from the Procurator of the Peterskloster in Erfurt, Berthold de Honved. In 1332 a village was called Nydern Hovelden (as opposed to Obern Hovelden ). A brewery was first mentioned in 1524. In 1599, the Enzeröder lake was drained, where the Hohenfelden reservoir is located today. The border between the Erfurt and Kurmainzer areas on the one hand and the Oberkranichfeld rulership on the other hand ran along the small Krummbach stream , which was also known as the Richtsbach and which today feeds the Hohenfelden reservoir and barns. The northern part, which was formerly Kurmainzer (about four fifths), went to Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1815 , the southern part to Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1663 and Saxe-Meiningen in 1825 . The residents living there - they were called Meininger  - complained at the time that they had  to go to school and church in the northern part of the community - in other Weimar countries - and were also buried there. From 1824, peat was cut where the reservoir is today, with many interruptions until 1990. The local volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1873. A new school was built on the eastern edge of the village in 1894/95, and another classroom was added in 1957/58 .

The border was lifted on August 1, 1913, but is still recognizable today by a boundary stone. The place now came completely to Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. In 1914, the town received a water pipe. In 1924, Hohenfelden was connected to the power grid. Wealthy families from Erfurt began building holiday homes on the Katzenberg in the north of the town in 1924/25 . Among them were u. a. the Trommsdorff family of pharmacists , the descendants of the horticultural entrepreneur Ernst Benary and the bankers Störke, Fritzner and Dittmann. In 1960 the school was closed and the students were sent to the Tonndorfer School. In 1966/67 the construction of the recreational area Hohenfelden reservoir began , which was completed in 1975. In 1976 the new sports field and athletes' home were built, and in 1979 the open-air museum was founded. The village experienced the reconstruction of three village wells in 1994, the construction of a new bell house on the Anger in 1997. In 1999 the village celebrated its 700th anniversary.

  • The Thuringian open-air museum Hohenfelden is located on the eastern edge of the village . The 30 museum buildings from the 17th to 20th centuries show how people in Central Thuringia used to build, live and work. The buildings on display include farms, workshops, apiaries, a one-class school, a village brewery and the museum restaurant Einkehr zum alten Pfarrei .
The museum was nominally founded in 1976, and the realization began in 1979 when the village rectory was acquired for the museum. From 1980 onwards, mainly endangered rural buildings with historical value were moved to Hohenfelden. At the same time, the location was placed under monument protection. In addition to the museum village, from 1990 the museum began to increasingly look after the numerous listed objects in the village. For the children's and youth series Schloss Einstein , some scenes were shot in the open-air museum for its 15th season.
  • Old school : The building's basement dates from 1787. After a village fire, the upper floor was rebuilt in 1811. The house was used as a school until 1894. Today there is a permanent exhibition of a historical classroom.
  • The 38 hectares large reservoir Hohenfelden was about 1.5 kilometers east of the community created from 1966 to 1975, he now serves mainly the recreation for residents of the nearby cities of Erfurt and Weimar .
Numerous outdoor events take place in the amusement park in summer . This included the Highfield Festival , which took place annually from 1998 to 2009 and was the largest indie rock festival in the new federal states with more than 20,000 visitors . In 2009 this festival took place for the last time in the municipality of Hohenfeld, as the owner of the area on which the visitors camped no longer made his land available due to the subsequent restricted agricultural usability. Festival visitors often used their parking spaces as rubbish dumps to dispose of household items (washing machines, refrigerators, old tents, etc.) that were no longer needed. The festival has been taking place at Lake Störmthaler in Saxony since 2010 .
Village church St. Burkard : A parish church in Hohenfelden is first mentioned in 1439. After the fire of 1810, it was re-inaugurated in 1813.

societies

  • In 1935 a gliding school was inaugurated. During the Nazi era, a glider training facility for the Hohenfelden Nazi Fliegerkorps was located here . Gliding is still part of the theme park's offerings today.
  • In 1949 the sports club Traktor Hohenfelden was founded (football, handball, athletics, chess)
  • In 1995 the Hohenfelder Karneval Club eV was founded, which offers its events in the community hall.
  • In 2001 the brewing and culture association was founded. Since then, beer has been brewed again in the old museum brewery according to the old custom.
