About this picture

Rittersdorf is a municipality in the south of the Weimarer Land district and part of the Kranichfeld administrative community .

Geography and geology

The village lies on a trough-shaped high plateau of the Ilm-Saale-Kalkplatte and can be reached via the state road 87 from Stadtilm to Kranichfeld via a steadily ascending local road that runs through a forest. Another connection exists via the provincial road 1060 from Bad Berka to Tannroda . Geologically, the district of Rittersdorf is on the edge of the Thuringian Basin. The geological origin is shell limestone remote from the groundwater . The Mohrenthal settlement is part of Rittersdorf.

History and present

St. Georg Church in Rittersdorf (2012)

The place is a Franconian foundation around 1150. The first documented mention of the place was on August 25, 1311. Rittersdorf was and is an agricultural place.

The dominant feature (in 2012) is the cultivation of rape in the surrounding fields ("energy crops"). The energy cooperative Rittersdorf eG supplies solar power for the first Thuringian green power tariff with regionally generated solar power.

There are beautifully renovated half-timbered residential and farm buildings in the townscape, mostly earlier farmhouses, but partly overlaid with insulation panels. The church of St. George has been restored.

Awards

In November 2015, Rittersdorf was named an "Energy Commune". The decisive factor was the local production of renewable energies by a community energy cooperative , among other things with the help of a solar park on a former garbage dump and supported by a regional green electricity tariff.
