geography

Tannroda is located in the middle Ilm valley , at the confluence of the Schwarza river into the Ilm , on the edge of the wooded part of the Tannrodaer saddle (part of the Ilm-Saale-Platte ). In the north and east, the place is surrounded by extensive forests. The small settlements of Kottendorf and Böttelborn are located south of the village . The classic city of Weimar (17 km) and the Thuringian capital Erfurt (33 km) can be reached quickly.

history

Castle and rule of Tannroda

The high medieval castle Tannroda , built over the southern slope of the Ilm, was the ancestral castle of the Lords of Tannrode, first mentioned in 1174 . The extensive castle complex probably dates back to the 12th century. Since 1392 the lords of Querfurt were enfeoffed with the castle, followed by the robber baron Apel von Vitzthum, who went down in history as the “fire chief of Thuringia” . The castle was destroyed by a force from Erfurt and mercenaries serving the Duke of Weimar. In the 16./17. In the 19th century, two modest castles were built. The tiled "Red Castle" soon burned down, the building material was used in 1824 to build the new Michaeliskirche. The slate-covered "Blue Castle" became the manor seat, acquired in 1854 by the Barons von Gleichen-Rußwurm. The last owner, the conservative journalist Heinrich von Gleichen-Rußwurm , was expropriated without compensation in 1945 on the basis of the land reform in the Soviet Zone .

After decades of dilapidation with partial emergency safeguards, the castle grounds have been renovated piece by piece since the 1990s. The keep (22 m high) serves as a lookout tower again. The arcade building has already been restored , in which the Thuringian basket-making museum was set up in 1998 by the active Heimatverein founded in 1996 . The “Blue Castle” awaits an investor with its partially walled-up windows. The keep with the castle ruins, the castle and the Michaeliskirche together form the landmark of Tannroda on an elevation.

Since December 2017, the fortunes of the historic castle have been managed by the non-profit family foundation Burg Tannroda. The Bähr family decided to lay the initial foundation for a revitalization of the place during their lifetime. The aim is to refurbish the ensemble by building and to provide a modular use of accommodation, catering, seminar and therapy offers, cultural performances and communal living. The first building, the so-called east wing, was renovated in 2019. There are 4 apartments, 1 administration office, 2 seminar rooms and a restaurant.

City history

The place was first mentioned as "Rode" around the date 1103/16 in a document from the Erfurt Peterskloster . The Tannroda settlement developed under the protection of the castle. In 1403 town charter was granted. During the Thirty Years' War the place was heavily plundered and devastated. Under Duke Wilhelm Ernst , the city and palace came under direct state administration for a time in 1680. Tannroda was considered an arable town , basket weaving had a certain importance. The commercial and industrial development of the city experienced many setbacks, mostly caused by city fires. The grinding mill, which was converted into a powder mill in 1799 , was destroyed by an explosion in 1887; after 1802 a brickworks, several wood processing plants, a metal factory, an art enamel factory and in 1906 a paper factory were built. The paper mill, the largest in Tannroda, was expanded considerably around 1923; it was closed in 1992 and dismantled in 2011. The basket-making trade went out in 1990. On-site work is provided by Edelstahlbau GmbH , a wood processing company and an agricultural company. In 1994 Tannroda was incorporated to Bad Berka, before the place was self-employed and had since 1403 city law held.

The district mayor has been Günter Schmieder since 2014.
