Life

Presumably Sibutus was a student of Conrad Celtis in Vienna before he was awarded the poet's crown by Emperor Maximilian at the Reichstag in Cologne , where he also teaches rhetoric at the University of Cologne . In the winter semester of 1505 he switched to the University of Wittenberg , where he took over the professorship for humanistic literature and from 1507 reads alongside Simon Vach on rhetoric. Sibutus belonged to the group of humanists who appeared with writings before Martin Luther's appearance. Like Andreas Meinhardi, he took part in the rhetorical glorification of the reputation of the Wittenberg University. In poetic verses, he glorifies the Wittenberg conditions of that time. In Wittenberg he was in contact with Ulrich von Hutten and Christoph von Scheurl . It is said that he married an 80-year-old woman during his time in Wittenberg in order to secure himself materially.

On July 15, 1520, he entered the registry of the University of Rostock . from 1522 Luther stood up for him. Despite his advocacy of Luther in 1522, Sibutus, as a humanist, remains a representative of Catholic teaching. He turns against the Anabaptists and sets original, playful accents in his poems that extend far beyond the scholasticism of the time.
