history

The high medieval castle, built over the southern slope of the Ilm, was the ancestral castle of the Lords of Tannrode, first mentioned in 1174 . The extensive castle complex probably dates back to the 12th century, it is mentioned in 1194. In 1392 the Lords of Querfurt were enfeoffed with the castle, in 1418 it came to the Vitzthum family . After the castle was owned by the robber baron Apel Vitzthum in 1465 , it was destroyed by Erfurt and Weimar citizens, came to the Counts of Gleichen-Blankenhain and in 1487 became the property of the Lords of Bünau .

After a fire in 1551, the castle was converted into a two-part castle , the Red Castle and the Blue Castle, and in 1597 the lords of Gleichen became co-owners. - After the Red Castle and the keep burned down in 1775 , the Red Castle was demolished in 1824.

From 1854 to 1945 the castle was owned by the Barons von Gleichen-Rußwurm and used as a manor , underwent extensive demolition, renovation and new construction measures and fell into disrepair from 1970 onwards has extensive renovation work carried out.

investment

The 22 meter high round donjon on a bricked square base with beveled upper corners, probably built in the 12th century , today used as a lookout tower, is located at the highest point of the irregular castle complex with outer bailey . The remains of the former residential building with a round-arched entrance are behind the keep, the farm buildings in the outer area.

Today the facility is used as a local museum.
