Am Ettersberg is a rural community in the Weimarer Land district in the German state of Thuringia , which was established on January 1, 2019.
The community was named after the Ettersberg , a mountain range in the interior of the Thuringian basin .

The municipality of the Landgemeinde Am Ettersberg extends over the area of numerous localities north of Weimar .

The community consists of the districts Berlstedt , Buttelstedt , Daasdorf , Großobringen , Haindorf , Heichelheim , Hottelstedt , Kleinobringen , Krautheim , Nermsdorf , Ottmannshausen , Ramsla , Sachsenhausen , Schwerstedt , Stedten am Ettersberg , Thalborn , Vippachedelhausen , Weiden and Wohlsborn .

As part of the voluntary mergers of the regional reforms in 2018 and 2019, the municipalities of Berlstedt, Buttelstedt (city), Großobringen, Heichelheim, Kleinobringen, Krautheim, Ramsla, Sachsenhausen, Schwerstedt, Vippachedelhausen and Wohlsborn agreed on a merger to form the city and rural municipality on January 1, 2019 At the Ettersberg. Together with Ballstedt , Ettersburg and Neumark (city) as well as Rohrbach and Leutenthal, they belonged to the administrative community of the northern district of Weimar , which was also dissolved on January 1, 2019. Ballstedt, Ettersburg and Neumark remained independent municipalities, the administration is carried out by the rural community Am Ettersberg. Leutenthal and Rohrbach were incorporated into the neighboring rural community of Ilmtal-Weinstrasse . On the Ettersberg, the name "city" no longer bears since August 1, 2019.

Municipal council
The municipality council of the municipality Am Ettersberg consists of 20 elected municipality council members. In addition, the mayor is a member of the municipal council. The result of the municipal council election on May 26, 2019 led to 16 seats for the rural community voter group (81.0% of the vote) and 4 seats for the IG Wir am Ettersberg list (49.6%). The turnout was 70.7%.

In the mayoral election on May 26, 2019, none of the four candidates could achieve the required absolute majority. Thomas Hess (CDU) only just missed this with 48.9%. In the runoff election on June 9, 2019, he was elected mayor of the rural community with 65.2% of the valid votes. The turnout was then only 47.6%.
