Henry Cott'n Kotowski (born September 24, 1944 in Alt Grottkau , Grottkau district , Upper Silesia province ; † July 4, 2019 ) was a German drummer , guitarist , singer and composer .

Musical development

In 1959, Kotowski began his musical career as a drummer with the band Franke Echo Quintett . From 1962 to 1964 he played with the Telestars, who were recruited from the Franke Echo Quintet. In 1964, Kotowski founded the beat band Sputniks , which caused a sensation as the "Beatles of the East" and became one of the top bands in the GDR beat movement. The band became known with the title Guitar Twist , composed by Kotowski , which was released as a single on the GDR label Amiga in 1964 .

With talk of Walter Ulbricht on the 11th Plenum of the Central Committee of the SED 1965 on the Yeah Beatles as an example of Western Beat music ( "Is it really true that we must copy nu any dirt that comes from the West? I think , Comrades, with the monotony of Je-Je-Je, and whatever it is called, yes, one should put an end to it. ”) The Sputniks were banned in 1966. Kotowski switched to the Uve Schikora Combo from Dresden .

In 1967 he founded his first band, the Henry Kotowski Sextet . After Udo Jacob and Dieter Hertrampf left the Udo Wendel Combo, Peter Meyer and Harry Jeske joined the Henry Kotowski Sextet in May 1969. In addition to Meyer and Jeske, Herbert Dreilich was also part of the band. When Meyer and Jeske founded the Puhdys in autumn 1969 , Kotowski began a solo career as a singer and wrote titles for Manfred Krug , among other things .

In the meantime he had started studying at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin , which he finished in 1971. In the same year he appeared with the titles Go not alone and you were there in the year-end broadcast of the pop studio on GDR television .

At times Kotowski joined the Gerd Michaelis choir . In 1974 he became the singer of the Theo Schumann Combo . A year later he gave short interludes with the Modern Soul Band and Klaus Lenz . From 1976 to 1978 he worked with Peter Paulick as Peter & Cott'n , a successful country duo. In 1978 they separated again.

While Paulick played with Thomas Friedrich as Peter and Paul , Kotowski worked as a soloist again and recorded the title Guitar Ben on the GDR radio . Further original compositions with arrangements by Horst Krüger followed.

In 1984 Kotowski moved to the Federal Republic of Germany and, as Cott'n Feels, devoted himself exclusively to country music . In 1994 he returned to Berlin and revived the beat band Sputniks . In addition to beat standards, the band presents a unique style of music. Well-known and modern pop songs are performed in the style of traditional beat music from the 1960s. He also played in the country band Hufnagel . Kotowski also composed film scores. He wrote the title Rock the Rock for the film parody Tell , which was released in theaters in autumn 2007. Further compositions were created for the film Neues vom Wixxer .

Kotowski died on July 4, 2019 after a long illness.
