Melodie und Rhythmus is a magazine that first appeared in 1957 as a specialist journal for dance and light music in the GDR . On January 5, 2018, the publisher announced its temporary termination. Since March 2018, the publisher has been trying to win new subscribers and advertising customers so that the magazine can continue to appear.

In the first few years the paper followed the cultural and political line of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany , but then the content was loosened up with reports on national and international artists as well as reports on new publications. In each issue there was a color poster of a current star.

Melody and Rhythm was one of the most popular and sought-after magazines in the GDR. Due to the rationing of paper and limited printing capacities in the GDR, it was usually sold out quickly .

After reunification , the paper was taken over by Henschel-Verlag Berlin, which ceased production in 1991.

In 2004 the magazine was re-founded by Christian Hentschel (most recently editor-in-chief), Andreas Fack and Tino Eisbrenner . The magazine then called melodie & rhythmus was first published quarterly and later every other month. The main focus was on German-speaking, especially East German, interpreters.

In January 2006 Melodie & Rhythmus was discontinued after only nine issues. The main reason for this was the inadequate advertising revenue from the start. Melodie & Rhythmus has been published monthly by Heimat-Verlag Berlin since June 29, 2006 . On May 1, 2008 Heimat-Verlag transferred the chief editor from Christian Hentschel to Nicole Kirchner. From December 22nd, 2008 the publishing house 8. Mai GmbH took over the publication. This publisher also publishes the newspaper Junge Welt . In October 2009, Kirchner was appointed editor-in-chief to Robert Mießner, who left the magazine in January 2010 due to divergent ideas about content. After revising and developing the content, the music magazine has been published every two months since 2010. Due to conceptual stagnation and falling sales and advertising income, Kirchner was released from her job in June 2011 by the management of the publishing house. The publishing house appointed its previous deputy Jürgen Winkler as editor-in-chief. The new editorial team broke away from the Ostrock image and concentrated on the current music scene in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The layout was relaunched in March 2012. The re-profiling and relaunch led to an increase in income from advertisements and kiosk sales. On August 31, 2012, Winkler left the publishing house, a successor was not named. The remaining editors changed the profile again. You put the focus more on the Ostrock and politically bind Melody & Rhythm more closely to the daily newspaper Junge Welt . The editorial office is in Berlin. Since the May / June 2014 issue and another revision of the concept, the animal rights activist, publicist and Junge Welt employee Susann Witt-Stahl has been editor -in- chief.

In addition to a focus on content, each issue contains a detailed section with reviews from all cultural areas. Well-known authors are Moshe Zuckermann , Michel Chevalier and Dietmar Dath . The magazine organizes discussion and music events.

On January 5, 2018, the publisher announced that the next issue could not appear and that there was no prospect of resumption of production in the foreseeable future. On March 31, 2018, a campaign began to attract new subscribers and advertisers in order to be able to get the magazine to appear again. By the end of June 2018, around 1,200 subscriptions had been acquired, which initially ensures that the magazine will continue to appear.
