The village was founded in the 12th century and is one of the oldest settlements in the area. The place was first mentioned in 1210 as villa Grodcovichi . Neu-Grottkau, today's Grodków , was founded in the middle of the 13th century. For the year 1234 the name Antiquum Grotcow and 1296 the name Grodovichi is handed down. In 1369 it was mentioned as Heinrichsdorf .

After the First Silesian War in 1742, Alt-Grottkau and most of Silesia fell to Prussia .

After the reorganization of the province of Silesia , the rural community Alt-Grottkau belonged to the district of Grottkau in the administrative district of Opole from 1816 . In 1845 there was a castle, a Vorwerk, a Catholic parish church, a brewery, a distillery, an inn, a pub, two mills and 120 other houses in the village. In the same year, 847 people lived in Alt-Grottkau, 30 of them Protestants. In 1855, 961 people lived in Alt-Grottkau. In 1865 there was a Scholtisei , 15 farmers, six half-farmers, 42 gardeners and 22 cottagers , and eight dominial positions. The two-class Catholic school was attended by 223 students in the same year. In 1874 the district of Alt-Grottkau was founded, which consisted of the rural communities Alt Grottkau and Klein Neudorf and the estate districts of Alt Grottkau and Klein Neudorf. The first head of office was the manor owner and lieutenant Scupin in Klein Neudorf. In 1885 Alt-Grottkau had 863 inhabitants.

In 1933 838 people lived in Alt-Grottkau and 830 in 1939. Until the end of the war in 1945, the place belonged to the district of Grottkau .

Alt Grottkau was captured by Soviet soldiers on February 6th. Shortly afterwards the German Wehrmacht tried to recapture the village. Despite high losses on the Soviet side, the village could not be recaptured. As a result, Alt-Grottkau fell under Polish administration in 1945, like most of Silesia . It was subsequently renamed Stary Grodków and joined the Silesian Voivodeship. The German population was largely expelled . In 1950 it was incorporated into the Opole Voivodeship. In 1999 the place came to the re-established Powiat Nyski . In 2011 453 people lived in the village.
