The VEB Lied der Zeit Musikverlag is a former state publisher of the GDR for music literature (VEB = publicly owned company ). The publisher emerged from the Lied der Zeit Schallplatten-Gesellschaft mbH , which consisted of a record production company and a music publisher. With the nationalization in 1953, the record production was continued as VEB Deutsche Schallplatten and the music publisher under the previous name as an independent company.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the company was continued by Roba Music Verlag as Lied der Zeit GmbH .

Publishing history

On August 12, 1946, the Soviet military administration in Germany granted Ernst Busch the license to found the record company Lied der Zeit. With the notarial certification on February 3, 1947, the entry in the commercial register took place on March 18, 1947 as Lied der Zeit Schallplatten-Gesellschaft mbH.

By the end of 1947, 250,000 records had been completed. Edited contemporary songs were (Song of the time) and classical music ( Eterna ) and dance music ( Amiga ). From 1950, Lied der Zeit edited records and sheet music .

From 1946 to 1953 Ernst Busch published the music and text collection Internationale Arbeiterlieder (1st edition 32 pages, 23rd edition 260 pages). Busch had already edited this collection in Spain in 1937 as Canciones de guerra de las Brigadas Internacionales . A short time later the series Spain 1936–39 was banned and the remaining production was crushed; the statement contained therein was too "liberal" from a Stalinist point of view.

In 1953, the Lied der Zeit Schallplatten-Gesellschaft mbH was converted into public property and thus effectively became state property . In the same year, the record production separated from the sheet music department: The independent companies VEB Deutsche Schallplatten and the music publisher VEB Lied der Zeit emerged from the two departments, which was spun off on April 1, 1954, based in East Berlin on Thälmannplatz .

In 1954 the first music albums appeared; In 1956 dance sheet music was issued to band leaders and musicians by subscription (teddy series). In 1957 the publishing house was connected to its own stage operation for the area of ​​"cheerful" music theater . The first book appeared in 1958. The publisher's five-year existence was publicly recognized during the Leipzig Trade Fair . From 1959 to 1960 Lied der Zeit played a key role in national dance music competitions and published the new titles. The first composer portraits in album form appeared from 1960 to 1961 for Gerd Natschinski , Gerhard Honig , Wolfgang Kähne , Siegfried Mai , Alo Koll and Helmut Nier .

In 1962, the company moved into new premises on Rosa-Luxemburg Strasse in Berlin. Another production line was opened in 1963; the first color artist photos were published.

With the title Good evening, dear Sandmann , which was created in cooperation with the German television broadcasting company, the publishing house began to publish children's books with contemporary songs in 1964. Later Mr. Fuchs and Mrs. Elster followed , Pittiplatsch goes through the city , Schnatterinchens dolls corner , fairy tales in the song part 1 and 2 and others.

On the 15th anniversary of the GDR, the musical Mein Freund Bunbury by Bez / Degenhardt / Natschinski, which was published by Lied der Zeit , premiered in the Metropol-Theater , East Berlin. The GDR musical has so far been staged in many productions with over 1,000 performances at theaters in the GDR, the Soviet Union, the VR Bulgaria, the Hungarian VR, the SR Romania, the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria. The publishing editions of the hit text booklets Schlager für Dich were sold more than six million times in 1965. In 1966 the arrangement book, a handy guide for professional musicians and amateurs, and the book Jazz Analysis and Aspects are published for the first time.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution , the sheet music album was released in the evening in Moscow. This was followed by albums with well-known melodies from other world cities.

As a contribution to the 10th  Workers' Festival , the musical Conny and the Lion by Eidam / Zimmermann, published by Lied der Zeit , was performed in Halle .

In 1969, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the GDR, the music albums Now look at what has become of us and brothers, to the sun, to freedom . From 1970 onwards, attractive pieces from different genres for various instruments were published in regular succession.

For the popular children's instrument Triola , the publishing house began in 1971 with the publication of game literature under the title We make music on the Triola .

With the album Gisela May - A Portrait in Notes , Lied der Zeit began to publish sheet music portraits of well-known performers. We followed . Monika Hauf / Klaus-Dieter Henkler , Karel Gott , Andreas Holm-exclusiv , Puhdys-Beat and Rock and much more. In 1972 Not cheat, darling, the music for the successful DEFA film of the same name was published.

On the occasion of the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students in 1973, the portrait books Angela Davis , pop stars of socialist countries as well as photo cassettes with portrait photos of popular performers who took part in the festival, were added to the range. In 1973, Wie ein Stern by Frank Schöbel was published by Lied der Zeit . With the second edition of Märchen im Lied , more than a million children's books with contemporary songs were produced and distributed.

Schlagertreff 1973 - a calendar with large color artist photos for the young - was a publishing success and from 1984 it was redesigned under the title Show '84.

With Johann Strauss and the city on the beautiful blue Danube , Otto Schneidereit published his first composer biography for Lied der Zeit. Richard Tauber , Franz von Suppé and Franz Lehár (1984) follow . In 1974 Bez / Degenhardt / Natschinski followed up on their Bunbury success with the musical Terzett, which was published again by Lied der Zeit .

Venceremos - a sheet music album with songs from Chile  - appears in 1975 as a contribution by the publisher to the great solidarity campaign with the Chilean people. The first illustrated book, Fascination Jazz (Drechsel / Rosenhain) and the first song collection Das lachende Deck appeared.

In 1976, the song book DDR-specifically 1 was published. The publishing house began its edition of political songs. In 1976 the musical Casanova by Bez / Degenhardt / Natschinski , published by Lied der Zeit , and in 1977 the musical Geld wie Heu by Eidam / Werion were premiered at the Metropol Theater Berlin .

Rosa Laub - the rock opera by Waldtraut Lewin and Horst Krüger has been relocated. After the fall of the Wall , the takeover by Roba Music Verlag in Hamburg and the continuation of the publishing business from Hamburg (administration) and Berlin (radio TV station and copyright support) took place.
