Franz von Suppè

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz von Suppè ( pronunciation : [ zuˈpɛː ] or [suˈpɛː]) (born April 18, 1819 in Spalato (Split) , Dalmatia ; † May 21, 1895 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer who is considered the creator of the Viennese operetta. According to the entry in the baptismal register, which erroneously reproduces Suppè without any accent, his full real name is: Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Soup. Suppè left an oeuvre with over 200 works for the stage, including three operas and 26 operettas performed , of which theOvertures to Poets and Peasants and Light Cavalry are particularly well known. His operetta Boccaccio is still part of the standard repertoire of German-speaking theaters.

Life

On the occasion of Franz von Suppè's 200th birthday, research by Suppè researcher Andreas Weigel revealed that essential aspects of Suppè's biography and genealogy , which had previously been regarded as certain, were flawed, questionable and in need of correction for over a century. For example, as early as 1838, Suppè dedicated his setting of Schiller's poem “An Emma” to his future wife Therese Merville , which is why he could not have met her until 1841 (as has been unanimously passed down). There was just as little biographical information about the first wife as about their three children (Anna, Peter, Therese) and their relatives with Adolf von Boog , Philippine von Edelsberg , Arthur Schnitzler or Rosa and Karl Streitmann . In addition, the maiden name of Suppès mother, Jandowsky , was wrongly passed down as Landovsky in all biographies for a century , which is why the origin of Suppès maternal ancestors from the Moravian Brno and Bavarian Munich remained hidden. Suppès alleged medical or law studies (in Bologna , Padua or Vienna) are inventions, his paternal ancestors, supposedly from Belgium or the Austrian Netherlands or Cremona , come from Rijeka , Karlobag and Senj , and his second wife Sofie Strasser , who is probably the librettist of his operetta Pique Dame (1864), he met in 1860 (not until 1864). The question that remains unanswered is why Suppè - like his two wives - usually made himself a year younger (against his better judgment) by specifying April 18, 1820 as the basis for his publicly celebrated birthdays, although it can be proven that it was 1819 was born.

To the Italian spelling of the family name

Franz v. Suppès signature (1851)

By Robert Franz Müller took place, Vladimir Haklik and Andreas Weigel refutation of the alleged Belgian and Austrian-Dutch descent, the French spelling "Suppe" was due, has to re-return to the Italian spelling of the family name with Accent Grave , Suppè out which can be read in Suppès autographs , in official documents and certificates, such as Suppès last official registration form. In his dissertation in 1941, Julius Kromer himself named the composer as a “key witness” for the officially documented Italian spelling of the family name: “In his letters and notebooks, on self-written sheet music and textbooks, there is only one name and one signature: Suppè. That is the composer's unequivocally declared will, which we alone have to observe and which we have documented hundreds of times over. "

This Italian spelling is the way that Suppé's father spelled the family name when he officially signed the official announcements published in the Zara Official Gazette as the district secretary. In addition, Vladimir Haklik refers to historical files that Suppè's grandfather personally signed with “Suppè”. Even the marriage entry of Franz von Suppès great-great-grandparents Georg and Antonia Suppè from February 9, 1722 proves the Italian spelling of the family name, which means that this spelling of the family name is officially guaranteed for well over a century (marriage entry from 1722, registration slip from 1887 ).

Accordingly, Suppè did not write his family name with an Italian accent grave, in order to be considered Italian, but because his ancestors have verifiably spelled their family name that way since 1722 and he through his great-great-grandfather, who was born in Grobnik around 1700, and his who was born in Rijeka around 1700 Great-great-grandmother had Italian ancestors. The home of the Suppè family had been the Adriatic coastline between Rijeka and Makarska since at least 1700, where Italian was the official language and this remained long after Suppè's move to his mother's hometown, Vienna, long after Suppè had moved in 1835. The widespread spelling Suppé with accent Aigu is just as flawed as the spelling without any accent.

Adolescent years and musical training

Contrary to what is rumored in the Suppè biographies by Otto Keller (1905), Julius Kromer (1941), Otto Schneidereit (1977), Ingrid Scherney (2005) and Hans-Dieter Roser (2007), Suppé's paternal ancestors did not come from Belgium or the Austrian Netherlands still Cremona , but from Rijeka , Karlobag , Senj and Makarska . Suppè grew up in Zadar, where he attended the first of two humanity classes until he moved to Vienna. Suppè is said to have sung in the church choir of Zadar Cathedral at the age of eight, and its later choirmaster Giovanni Cigalla is said to have given him his first musical knowledge. Suppè is said to have received flute lessons from Kapellmeister Giuseppe Ferrari. Suppè is said to have acquired fundamental compositional knowledge at an early age through both teachers . At the age of sixteen (1835) he composed his first major work, a mass in F major, which he revised forty years later and published as Missa Dalmatica .

After the early death of Suppès father (1796–1835), Suppès mother (1787–1875), a native of Vienna, moved back to their hometown together with their sixteen-year-old son Franz in September and October 1835, where they lived on Alsergrund . Suppès biographers report that both of them lived with their mother's father in Wieden in 1835, and that he had a decisive influence on Suppès' education by vehemently opposing his musical preference. However, Andreas Weigel was able to prove that Suppès 'Viennese grandfather died in 1803, which is why he was unable to influence Suppès' educational and life path. In Vienna, Suppè was enrolled at the “Polytechnic Institute” (today: Vienna University of Technology ) , but broke off this training in May 1836. The medical course mentioned in the biographical literature is - as the inquiry in the archives of the University of Vienna has shown - fictitious. The Viennese music historian Robert Franz Müller mentioned this as early as 1926 and also proved that Suppès law studies in Padua are also fictitious, but Suppè briefly attended the Schottengymnasium in 1837/38 , which in 2019 based on the "Catalog from the school years 1837/38" has been verified. To finance his music studies, he gave Italian lessons.

Working as a composer

The obituary in the Wiener Zeitung of May 23, 1895.
Suppès tomb in Vienna's central cemetery.

In 1836 Suppè began to study as a private student with the Kapellmeister Ignaz von Seyfried . On August 15, 1836, Seyfried's birthday, the composition student Suppè completed another mass. He then worked on his first opera Virginia . He submitted this fragmentary student work, based on a libretto by Ludwig Holt, to his teacher Seyfried again as a piano reduction for assessment on August 15, 1837.

After completing his private music studies (May 1840), Suppè was hired by director Franz Pokorny as Kapellmeister and composer at the Theater in der Josefstadt in September 1840 , but from 1841 to 1844 he was transferred to Pokorny's Theater in Pressburg and Ödenburg , from where he started in 1844 Theater in der Josefstadt returned. Subsequently, Suppè worked between 1845 and 1862 at the Theater an der Wien , 1862/63 at the Quai-Theater and between 1863 and 1882 at the Carltheater as a composer and conductor. On the occasion of Franz Pokorny's death, Suppè composed the Requiem in D minor , which was premiered on November 22, 1855 at a memorial service in the Piarist Church of Maria Treu (Vienna) .

As a composer, Franz von Suppè was very productive. He wrote stage music for over 190 antics and other stage works, including the comedy Dichter und Bauer (1846) by Karl Elmar . In contrast, his orchestral and chamber music received little attention.

Suppè kept one peculiarity throughout his life: he always wrote down his scores in an “Italian order”; H. the violins and violas above, then flutes, oboes, clarinets. Horns trumpets, bassoons, trombones, timpani, percussion, violoncellos and double basses. Some contemporary prints - and also reprints - have changed this arrangement according to current practice; others kept it.

Inspired by the successes of Jacques Offenbach's operettas in Vienna, he composed his first one-act operetta Das Pensionat in 1860 and in the following years founded the Viennese operetta based on the local folk theater . After several small stage works, he created his second full-length operetta work Fatinitza in 1876 . His greatest triumph was the performance of the comic opera Boccaccio in Vienna in 1879 .

Franz von Suppè was buried in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery , Group 32A, No. 31. The solemn unveiling of the tomb created by Richard Tautenhayn with the simultaneous burial of the exhumed body in a metal sarcophagus took place on May 30, 1897.

Franz von Suppè memorial in Gars am Kamp

Permanent exhibition: Franz von Suppè room in the Zeitbrücke Museum
Franz von Suppès lived and worked in Gars am Kamp

The “ Zeitbrücke Museum ” in Gars am Kamp shows in its Franz von Suppè memorial some exhibits that were already presented between 1896 and 1908 in the “Suppè Museum” operated by Suppès' widow in his country house in Gars . Most of the exhibits come from the time after Suppès death or from the three or four houses that he and his widow owned after 1879 in Gars, which was first his summer retreat from 1876 to Suppès death (1895) and later his second home . Accordingly, in addition to the “Suppè memorial room”, Gars also has Suppès Landhaus, which he acquired thanks to the income from his commercially successful operettas “Fatinitza” (1876) and “Boccaccio” (1879) from the regional master builder Leopold Wieser, who incidentally also built the “Zeitbrücke Museum”, which Kremser Strasse (No. 40 and 41) was able to build. At the beginning of 1902, Suppè's widow Sofie donated the collection from her Garser “Suppè Museum” to the “Museum of the City of Vienna” (today: “ Wien Museum ”) for the establishment of a “Suppè Room”, which displayed the culturally valuable exhibits in 1908 Gars and presented it according to the dedication between 1912 and 1932. Since this Suppè estate entrusted to the “City of Vienna” has since been kept in their archives, depots and magazines, the Franz von Suppè memorial in the Zeitbrücke Museum is currently the only public permanent exhibition on Suppè in Europe.

On the occasion Suppes 200th birthday in 2019, the "Time Bridge Museum" does in one of Anton Ehrenberg pieces depot Suppes privately owned and Andreas Weigel curated additional special selected archive and shown, from the collection of the Wien Museum and the Austrian National Library come and made available to the general public for the first time since 1932. Following the exhibition, Andreas Weigel's richly illustrated Suppè monograph was published, in which, thanks to newly developed sources and archival material neglected by Suppè research, documented biographical facts were presented and discussed for the first time, including much that has so far been published about Suppè's life and work, have fundamentally corrected.

Trivia

Franz von Suppès "O du mei Oesterreich", sheet music title from around 1880.

Alleged debut as a professional opera singer

It can be read again and again that Suppè even made his debut as a singer in the role of the buffalo doctor Dulcamara in Gaëtano Donizetti'sThe Love Potion ” , which invites the widespread misunderstanding that Suppè would have sung all the roles of “Doctor Dulcamara”: “In fact, Suppè sang on May 2, 1842 [...] at his workplace in the Bratislava City Theater between two small plays, together with the amateur Eleonora Erba-Odescalchi, the duet "Quanto amore" from Donizetti's "Liebestrank". "

Suppè-grandson wins important Supreme Court judgment

In 1907, Suppès grandson Oscar Edelsperger achieved through a judgment of the “ Supreme Court ” that his marriage to Rosalia Baß, which he entered into in Buenos Aires on August 26, 1904, was also recognized as a legally valid marriage in his fatherland Austria , although his wife was Jewish At that time, marriages between Christians and Jews were forbidden in Austria.

Suppès grandchildren: Persecuted as “half-Jews”

During the Nazi era, Suppès works were not banned in the Third Reich , as is sometimes claimed due to a journalistic shortening, but they probably received less attention because the grandchildren, who for the most part had sound musical training themselves, did not directly identify themselves as “half-Jews” and publicly committed to the work of their grandfather. Rather, Suppès granddaughters in Vienna were attacked as " half-Jews " and threatened in life and limb because their father, Suppès son Peter, was married to the Jew Pauline Markbreiter, who was also the aunt of the writer Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931), who and whose work was hated by the Nazis.

“I only have your love” authorship

The text of the hit operetta “Have I only your love” does not come from the two “Boccaccio” librettists Camillo Walzel alias Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée , but from Heinrich von Littrow's poem “Liebe und Treue”, which was written in his 1857 The book of poems “Aus der See” was published and two decades later Suppè set it to music for “Boccaccio”.

Suppès supposed Berlin quote

The wording of the Berlin hit song "You are crazy my child, you have to go to Berlin / where the crazy ones are / there you belong" is arbitrarily attributed to Franz von Suppè, who could possibly be named as a composer because the melody of the hit song from his “ Fatinitza ” march.

Light cavalry overture

Suppès works are and have been repeatedly adapted, edited and quoted by posterity, with the popular "light cavalry" overture being used artistically particularly often:

  • The overtures of the operettas Leichte Kavallerie, or The Daughters of Puszta and Poets and Peasants , were often used as film music
  • The music cabaret artist Walter Hedemann has written several overtures for his ensemble Pädagogian Harmonists , including Die Leichte Kavallerie, Dichter und Bauer and Die Schöne Galathée.
  • The melody of Freddy Breck's hit Rote Rosen (1973) is based on motifs from Suppès Dichter-und-Bauer overture.

Church music

  • Missa Dalmatica , Mass in F major, premier September 13th 1835 in the Church of St. Francis in Zadar
    • The sixteen-year-old Franz von Suppè composed this mass as his first sacred vocal work, the manuscript of which he completed on August 24, 1835 after the death of his father. The mass in F major was probably premiered shortly after Suppè moved to Vienna with his mother. With this fair, the young Suppè gained access to Ignaz Xaver Ritter von Seyfried's music theory lessons. In 1876 Suppè revised his youth mass, composed additional parts and published them under the title Missa Dalmatica .
  • Great Mass in C major for solos, choir and orchestra
    • Suppè composed this mass as a student of Ignaz von Seyfried in Vienna. It was premiered on August 15, 1836 in Vienna.
  • Mass in C minor for soloists, choir and orchestra
    • The mass was also completed under Seyfried's care in 1839 and premiered in Vienna in 1840. It is considered lost.
  • 6. Psalm “Lord, do not punish me” - great instrumental psalm for soloists, choir and orchestra, completed in 1839.
  • Missa pro defunctis , Requiem in D minor for soloists, choir and orchestra.
    • Suppè composed the Requiem in memory of Franz Pokorny, the director of the Theater an der Wien . Pokorny had committed Suppè to his house in 1845 and supported the young theater music director in many ways. The work was premiered as part of a memorial service on November 22, 1855 in the Piarist Church of Maria Treu in Vienna
  • The judgment of the dead - oratorio for solos, choir and orchestra. (1860)
    • Suppè uses the sequence (No. 1–7) of the Requiem, precedes it with a prelude and, between the choir parts, solo recitatives and arias based on texts by Otto Prechtler.

Remarks

  1. His fellow and posterity persistently ignored this spelling, which is why Julius Kromer warned in his Suppè dissertation in 1941 that the family name should be spelled as a sign of respect.
  2. Suppès widow - unlike her husband - did not attach great importance to the correct spelling of the name.
  3. Posterity has also ignored the authenticated spelling of his family name.
  4. With wrong year of birth and wrong work title!
