Anton Bittner
Anton Bittner (born July 30, 1820 in Melk , † June 7, 1881 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actor, folk writer and librettist .
Life
Little is known about Bittner's life. He began his stage career as an extra at the Theater in der Josefstadt , then he went to some north German provincial theaters as an actor. He returned to Vienna around 1850, and from 1860 he wrote folk plays and librettos, which were usually not particularly successful. In 1876 he began to suffer from a mental illness that made it impossible for him to continue in his profession. He was admitted to the Lower Austrian insane asylum on Brünnlfeld .
Anton Bittner is buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery.
The two one-act plays Everything with Steam and The Ice Shaft , written by Bittner in 1858 , became on April 29th together with Johann Nestroy's one-act farce, Verwickelte Geschichte! premiered in the Carltheater , but they had no audience success and were panned by the critics. To leave Bittner's one-act play Zimmer und Cabinet , an arrangement of Hermann Salingré's piece, was part of the premiere of Nestroy's abridged work Free of charge! on January 4, 1858.
