Louis-Benoît Picard (born July 19, 1769 in Paris , France , † December 31, 1828 there ) was a French playwright .

Picard was already composing for the stage at the age of 20, but only made a name for himself in 1797 with the comedy Médiocre et rampant ( edited by Friedrich Schiller under the title Der Parasit ). He appeared as an actor himself and in 1801 became director of the Théâtre Louvois . In 1807 he resigned the stage, became a member of the Académie française and director of the Imperial Academy of Music ( Paris Opera ), took over the Théâtre de l'Odéon in 1816 , but resigned in 1821.

He wrote character comedies such as Médiocre et rampant , L'entrée dans le monde and Duhautcours, as well as moral comedies that contain a practical moral. These include La petite ville , Monsieur Musard , Les Marionnettes and Les deux Philiberts . Schiller's nephew as uncle is a translation of the comedy Encore des Ménechmes . The Théâtre de P. (1812, 6 vol .; 1821, 8 vol .; new edition by Fournier, 1879) contains only those pieces which the author himself considered worthy of printing. He also wrote a number of novels.
