Friedrich Wilhelm Riese
Friedrich Wilhelm Riese (born February 24, 1807 in Berlin , † November 15, 1879 in Naples ) was a German writer . He was an important librettist and playwright of the 19th century. He published partially under the pseudonym "Wilhelm Friedrich" derived from his first name.
Life
Riese was born as the son of a porcelain manufacturer model master and attended several high schools in Berlin. After leaving the Joachimsthaler Gymnasium without a degree in 1824 , he went to Russia, where he appeared as a singer (tenor), including in Riga , Reval and at the Deutsche Oper in Moscow . In 1831 he went back home and, with the approval of the Prussian Ministry of Culture, was allowed to study without a school leaving certificate. He studied medicine in Berlin and from 1832 in Halle, later again in Berlin. During his studies, he became in 1831 a member of the old Halle fraternity Germania why he during Demagogenverfolgung 1836 after a long inquiry into incapacity, prohibition of medical practice and six years fortress detention had been condemned. In the black book of the Frankfurt central authority it is listed under No. 1338. In 1837 he received a pardon and the sentence was reduced to six months. He did not serve his sentence, but fled to London, where he took up an engagement at the opera. Because of his escape, he was from 1838 officially by profile sought. He decided not to complete his medical degree.
During his time in Hamburg he edited more than 100 French, English and Italian plays for the Thalia Theater there , especially comedies. In 1838 he met the composer Friedrich von Flotow ; in collaboration with the latter he created the libretti for his operas Alessandro Stradella (first performed in 1844) and Martha or Der Markt zu Richmond (first performed in 1847).
In 1852 Riese moved to Naples, where he died on November 15, 1879.
