Josef Nikola

Josef Nikola or Joseph Nikola ( pseudonym : NJ Kola ; January 14, 1816 in Vienna ; † October 9, 1892 ibid) was an Austrian politician and writer .

Life

Nikola graduated from high school and in 1840 took over a coffee house in Mariahilfer Hauptstrasse. In 1847 he moved his coffee house to Färbergasse . In 1842 he appeared as first lieutenant in the 2nd Vienna Citizens Regiment, and in 1848 as captain of the National Guard , of which he was a member until it was dissolved. At the time of the revolutions of 1848/1849 he was an advocate of the democratic current. In addition, he began his literary work during this time, with his pieces being performed several times in Austria and abroad.

Nikola was elected to the Vienna City Council for 1861 to 1872 and again for 1877 to 1890 . In 1868 he founded the Association for Friends of Progress , which is considered the first political association in Vienna, and was also a member of the Concordia press club . From 1870 he also represented the inner city in the Lower Austrian state parliament and from 1878 as a member of the Lower Austria regional committee . As a politician, he was particularly committed to caring for the poor, under him a homeless asylum in Vienna and an associated asylum association were founded, and orphan support was improved.

Nikola had become increasingly sick and eventually died of a heart attack . He was buried with great sympathy on October 12, 1892 in Vienna's central cemetery in grave group 23, row 2, number 51.
