News World Sheet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neuigkeits-Welt-Blatt was an Austrian daily newspaper that appeared from 1874 to 1943.

history

Originally this newspaper had a format of 35.5 × 23 cm (2 °), which was changed to 41.5 × 27 cm on March 16, 1943. The news world sheet appeared daily except on Sundays and public holidays. There were different issues. On the one hand the “Land-Ausgabe” with the additional title “Oldest Aryan daily newspaper of Vienna” and the “Wiener Ausgabe” with the same addition. In the Viennese edition, “illustrated editions”, an “illustrated subsidiary sheet” and in the country edition a “provincial edition” were published. From April 17, 1919 to 1920, the title addition "Daily newspaper for the middle class" was carried.

In 1895 the paper had a daily circulation of 40,000 and was able to gradually increase the numbers to 67,000 by 1915. In 1925, 30,000 copies were issued, in 1933 there were 40,000.

The paper changed its political orientation several times during the time of its publication. Despite its basic Catholic orientation, after the First World War the newspaper was provided with the subtitle “For the middle class” and in the 1920s, under its then editor August Theodor Kirsch senior, repeatedly took a stand for democratic principles.

From 1930 this course changed radically for the first time. The paper supported the authoritarian course of the Dollfuss government . From then on, it acted as the official journal of the Austrofascist government - Federal Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg repeatedly had leading articles placed in it.

As of March 1938, the paper was placed under the editor of August Theodor Kirsch junior in the service of the Nazi regime and thus received a special position: All other Viennese newspaper publishers either had to close their papers in 1938 and 1939, or to sell them to National Socialist publishers at given prices resign. Kirsch, however, was allowed to continue the news world sheet unmolested. In March 1938, the news-world newspaper gave itself the subtitle "Vienna's oldest Aryan daily newspaper" . It was not until the end of 1943, when there was a shortage of paper and raw materials in the whole of Austria due to the war, that the NS-loyal paper had to stop its publication.
